The down town shops of the Edison Electric Liht Co., in New York, were des troyed by fire yesterday morning, put ting out eighteen thousand incan- descent lights; loss $100,000, which is covered by insurance. The gov erness of the Princess was burnt to death in the fire which destroyed the Royal palace at Laeken Belgium; the library was not destroyed, as first re ported. Over 'our hundred cases of influenza are reported among the prisoners in Clinton prisoo,New York. - The strike among the Belgium colliers is spreading; twelve hundred miners have joined the movement. A heavy rain 6torm prevailed in St. Louis Wednesday night, which greatly demoralized the electric wires and several persons came near losing their lives by coming in contact with some wires that were prostrated; a pet do was instantly killed by stepping ou a wire and a lady who went to his relief was thrown some distance and fell unconscious; a horse was also killed by stepping on a wire. A railroad collision occurred near Sa vannah yesterday morning, which wrecked both engines land slightly injured several passengers. Cura tin & Co., a large iron manufactur ing' firm of Bellefont, Pa, made an assignment yesterday. In the Superior Court, at Wilmington, Del.," yesterday, Mrs. Eiizabeth ,B. A contemporary remarks, "Tbe yellow garter fad deeps op well. Well, it ought to k.ep up well. That's what it's therefor. They say the Prmcess Hatzfeldt is not happy. Nobody expected she would be. But Ilatr is getting away with the cash that she brought him. Er-Governor Kellogg, of Louisi ana, predicts that the next House of Representatives will be Democratic Kellogg was never deffioient in lead mule sense. The Hungarians in the Pennsyl vania coal regions are not without some redeeming traits. They eat cits. They stuff 'em with rice, bake 'em and revel like epicures. They say that whyn Speaker Reed smilss the smilest, and looks the sweetest he means the meanest. It will always do to keep a couple of detectives on the track of a man like that. The property assessment in the city of Richmond, Va., shows an aggregate of $52,185,000, an in crease of $6,000,000 within the past year, which tells well for the City on the James. A Washington dispatch says that the President is indignant at the story that he shot a hog for a coon. Well, if he didn't shoot the hog for a coon what did he shoot it for? He certainly didn't snppose that Vir ginia hogs were wild game. The young German Emperor has been induleiner in so many freaks lately that a rumor has gone abroad that he is losing his mind. He has always been disposed to be somewhat freaky, notably so in his oold treat ment of his mother. I VOL. XLV.NO. 86. Col. Shepard, of the New York Mail and Express, commends the selection of ex.Preaident Cleveland. I chairman of the judiciary centen- nial celebration, with the statement that a man who as Exeoative of the United States gave satisfaction not only to his own party, but to other parties as well, will do to trust. rip i . m 1 his is gratifying evidence that Bro. Shepard is neither totally blind, nor totally depraved, and can tell the truth sometimes. Gov. Larrabee, of Iowa, recently remarsea to a newspaper correspon dent: "We are not talking tariff much to the farmers just now." Well, we should think not. With oorn and oats down to the lowest notch they have been in twenty-five years, we t-hould not think the Iowa farmer in a frame of mind to have much tariff talk thrown at him. The farmers are taking their turn at the talking and the thinking too. The St. Louis Republic thinks the negro troubles reported in the South during the holidays were .caused mainly, if not altogether by bad , doubtless advise people who watt to be good, law-abiding, peaceable citi- zens, to let this bad, fighting whis key alone, and drink only the pure, A No 1 brand. With this week's issue the Lum berton Robesonian attained its ma jority, and entered upon its 21st year, etc at, hale and hearty. The Robe sonian is and always has been a good paper, true, strong, honest and pro gressive, and wide awake in tbe in terest of the State, section and peo ple for whom it speaks. It deserves success, and lots of it. It is said that President Harrison and Gen. Alger are getting jealous of each other. Alger thinks Harri son is trying to snow him under, and Harrison don't like the way that Alger is hustling about with the G. A. R. boys and laying pipes for the nomination next time. There must be a good deal of time lyiog around loose in New Jereey when a woman will spend a large part of forty-seven years stitching 30,000 patches into a crazy quilt, when she could go into a store and buy one without a patch in it for two dollars and a half. A dozen letter-carriers were ap pointed by the postmaster in Lancas ter, Pa., ' last Monday. Among a hundred applicants there was one sprightly, respectable colored man who was strongly recommended. But he was walked over. Why ? Cause he was colored. While the grip is striking so many southern oilies, the gripmen are on a strike in Pittsburg. If the grip should light on them too, between the grip and the gripmen that town will be in a bad fix. Sparkles Dally. Max ton Union. Creasy will, it is announced, deliver a lecture on I i,umberton, N. C, on Thursday night. January 9th. After the lecture a lodge of Knights of Pythias will be or ganized. That Capt. W. H. Bixby, U. S. Engineer in charge of our river and harbor improvements, is doing some good work, is shown by the pilots' re port of soundings, which gives fifteen feet at low tide on Bald Head bar, as against thirteen feet six inches twelve months ago. StDliari -HcommtDdtloDi of lb Hoard or Health Dr. F. W. Potter, Superintendent of Health, in his report to the Board of I Aldermen says: "I would beg for a furnace to destroy garoage. etc., that is now carried just I outside of the oity limits; many Dersons have made coinolaint of the great quantity of soiled paper that is carried about by the wind. If there is no actual harm, in this paper, it looks bad; but I believe there is dan ger in the trash and small pieces of paper wafted here and there it is not the quantity of filth that we so much ' dread as , the quality. I am also ordered by the Board oi Health to have all tainted meat (all unfit for use) burned, under my personal super vision. To do this will require many cords of wood and much kerosene oil. A furnace would remedy many incon veniences and allay very much fault finding; and we believe many gerus of disease might be destroyed that could not otherwise be reached. A great deal of ditching is required and which I had hoped would have been done before the approach of warm weather. Sewers at the intersection of Fourth and Walnut streets need attention." Opera Hooir, R. D. Mac Lean and Marie Prescott appear at the Opera House on Mon day evening next, as Othello and Iago.respectively, and we confidently expect a fine performance. , Of Miss Prescott the Omaha Sejmbliean pleasantly says: She is one of the most fascinating stars on the stage. The more you see of her acting, the more you hear ber sweet, mellow, musical :voice, the more surely and firmly does she take hold upon your admiration and sym pathy. Her elocution is remarkable in its effect and beauty. And the Times-Democrat praises Mr. MacLean as follows: Mr. McLean last night gave more than a satisfactory performance and fairly won the applause of the audi ence. His splendid stage presence, rich, deep voice and handsome face admirably fit him for the part, and to these natural advantages intelligent study has added so much that to-day he stands before the publio as a most promising tragedian. His conception of the part is thorough and accurate and he reaehes his climaxes grace fully. The sale of seats begins at Yate's book store to-morrow morning. AootberCoid We Cold wave signals were again dis played by the Weather Bureau in this city yesterday. The warning receiv ed from Washington, D. C, at 11:30 a. m , predicted a fall in temperature to about 36 degrees by 8 a. m. this morning or toamorrow. Temperatures as low as 28 degrees below zero were reported from stations in tl Northwest, and freezing weather covered the Lake region. The indications yesterday were that the cold wave then sweeping southward would be more general in its scope, and would last longer than the last' one that struck us. The mercury was well up in the seventies yesterday, "but when observations were taken at the Signal office at tlje evening hour, the temperature was about the same as was reported in the early morning. Clear weather follows the approach ing cold wave. Weather Forecasts. The following are the forecasts lor to-day. For Virginia, fair, followed by showers in southeast portion, oolder northwesterly winds and cold wave. For North Carolina, showers, with colder variable winds shifting to northerly and cold wave. For South Carolina, light local showers, easterly winds and slight fall in temperature. DpnjDt tr on me Bar. The pilots' report of soundings, as , VV"T , DOOK, January ist, ww, gio I . Tai tt J i 4. When this is done the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley will have 337 miles of road, extending from Wilmington to the western part of the State, running through sixteen counties, and open ing to the business enterprise of Wil mington sixty-one new points along the line of this road. The main line of road extending from Wilming ton to Mount Airy is 248 miles I in length, with a branch road at Fay- etteville, 57 miles, to Bennettsville, S.
