Tbe (aidot JoboPaul. In the telegraphic report of the proceedings of Congress, published in the Star yesterday, it was men tioned that the President had sent a message to the Senate in relation to the claim of the widow of John Paul, a German subject, arising out of his death in Wilmington, N. C, and re commending an appropriation of $5,000. Upon inquiry at the office of Mr. E. Peschau, Imperial German Consul, it was learned that on the 8th of May, 1886, Geo. Carl Theo. Pauls, mate of the German barque Eduard Pens, was knocked overboard and drowned The barque was lying at the Custom House wharf, discharging cargo, and the revenue cutter Colfax, at her wharf in front of the barque, in mov ing out fouled the Pens, the guide- chain ot the cutter bein& entangled in the cat head of the barque. The mate of the latter Mr. Paul tried to clear it away, and while he was engaged in this duty an order was given on the cutter to cut the lashings of the guide-chain, and this being done, the chain, released from its fastenings, struck the mate of the Pens, knock ing him into the river. Ttie testi mony of two witnesses showed that no warning was given, and it was in evidence that the collision might have been avoided. Testimony in the case was taken by Mr. Peschau, the Consul, and with all toe facts relating to the unfortunate occurrence, was forwarded by him to the proper authorities in Germany, resulting in the report and recom mendation, as published, for the pay ment to the widow of the deceased of $5,000 as an indemnity. In reply to xa communication sent in to them by the.Solicitor, regarding the sale of. liquors to minors, they say they have summoned witnesses and have interviewed the Mayor of the city, and find no information sufficient to warrant a presentment of any liquor dealer. The communication referred to above is as follows: To the Foreman of the Grand Jury : Ii is reported that on the evening of the 24th of December last, a number of youths were upon the streets of Wil mington in an intoxicated condition. The inference is that they bought in toxicating liquors from liquor dealers. There is no particular liquor dealer's name reported te me, and there is no direct charge made against any one. I have talked with our worthy aaayor, who informs me that he knows of no of fence that can be established by evi dence against 'any particular dealer, and this after he has examined a large number of witnesses upon the subject.
