The question of considering petitions
against the ratification of the extradi
tion treaty with Russia was agaiu before
the Senate yesterday, and after a brief
debate was withdrawn for the time be
ing; resolutions were reported in the
case of the claimants to Senatorial seats
from Montana, which will be considered
on Thursday next; the bill to declare
unlawful trflsts and combinations in re

debated until near the adjournment, and
it w ent over until to-day without action;
in the House a report was made against
concurrence in Senate amendments to
the Urgent Deficiency bill, and a com

A Berlin dispatch announces the ap

Humbert, as the only means of allaying
the anxiety prevailing in Austria and
Italy in regard to the situation arising
from Prmce Bismarck's resignation.
Jake Kilrain has found a true

of the Ways and Means Committee ex

bute before the first of May. and that a
vote on it will nos be reached sooner
than the first of June. A hotel

to be the cause of the tragedy; there were

Missouri is a great State. No
State but a great State could trot
out an eighteen-year old girl who
stands seven feet eight inches tail,
weighs two hundred and twenty-five
pounds and wears a number fi ft teen
shoe. The father of that girl is bit
terly opposed to the proposition to
tax hides, and well he may be.
Mr. Harrison don't take much
stock in Gen. Longstreet because he
learned that Longstreet didn't vote
for hun. This is a case ot virtue not
being its own reward. As the Gen
eral is left out in the cold he may be
sorry, but he has the advantage of
the fellows who did vote for Harri
son and are left out in the cold with
h:m.
Mr. Iana, of the New York Sun,
has discovered that human nature
was pretty much the same in Jeffer
son's time that it is now. That's a
fact. There was a good deal of
average human nature even in old
man Adam; as for Eve, we know,
unless she has been very much mis
represented, that she was chock ull
of it.
The President persistently refuses
to remove Marshal Mizel. of Flori
da. Why should he remove him?
All Mizel did was to pack some ju
ries to convict Democrats. This was
no crime from a Republican stand
point, but on the contrary is some
thing which would entitle him to
distinguished consideration, rather
than being bounced.
Miss Lonsbury, of New York
State, was a young lady of a lively
disposition. She got a pistol that
wasn't "loaded," took dead aim at a
young masculine friend, told him to
look out she was going to shoot him,
pulled the trigger and seemed very
much surprised and sorry when he
fell dead with a big bullet hole right
between his eyes.
Mr. O'Neill, of Pennsylvania, in
troduced in the House of Repre
sentatives a few days ago a remon
strance from the business men of
Philadelphia against an increase of
duty on oranges and lemons. Penn
sylvania don't grow these things, but
she sucks 'em, and she don't want to
have more tax put on her sucks.
She can stand a big iron and other
tariff and be happy, but no orange
lemon taxing for her. We don't
believe in it either, but if we be
lievt d in protection we wouldn't get
exci:ed over a tax on the occasional
orange and lemon we sucked.
The Cincinnati Commercial Gazette
says that if the colored people of the
South could only find some place
where they could enjoy equal politi
cal rights and have a pleasant cli
mate, they would rush right off. It
would surprise the Gazette man if
he really knew how how little the
average colored man was bothering
his head about the political rights
which give the sympathetic quill
drivers on the other side of the line
so mu'-h concern. He wouldn't
give a hatful of sunshine for all the
political right, that were ever put up
in the Republican shop.
Miss Isabella Brady, of New York,
was a tender maiden of fifty-eight
years, who gave her whole heart in
all her trusting innocence to Thomas
Miskell. who cruelly soured on rier
and left her sad and dejected. She
struck h;m for ten thousand dollars
in a breach of promise suit, and the
wretched masculine jury estimated
the damage done to that fifty-eight
year old heart at but six cents. And
that town wanted the World's Fair.
A corps of surveyors has been put
to work by the Richmond and Dan
ville railroad company to survey a
lir.e from Danville South, the objec
tive point of which is thought to be
Salisbury. There don't seem to be
much known about this project but
the impression is to get another line
so a to be in a condition to throw
up the lease of the North Carolina
road when it expires if satisfactory
terms for re-lease can't be made.
On tl.e i3th of April, Gen. Grant's
birth day, the Americus Club of
Pittsbu-g. Pa., is going to give a big
blow oi t and formally boost T. Reed
for the Presidency. This will be an
interesting event for Mr. Alger, J.
Sherman and others who are noting
T. Reed's movements and will take
the first good opportunity that pre
sents for putting a bug in his but
termilk The New York Tribune remarks
that not the smallest degree of sur
prise will be caused when the Dem
ocrats in Congress will discover that
the Lodge election. bill is unconstitu
tional. Well that shouldn't surprise
anybody, not even the Tribune, which
could see the unconstitutionality of
such a measure without a second
look if it wasn't as cross-eyed as it is.

A TOUCHING APPEAL
For Aid to Mark the Graves of 240 North
Carolinians in the Confederate Cemetery
at Fredericksburg, "Va.
The Ladies' Memorial Association of
Fredericksburg. Va., have sent out an
appeal to ladies of the South for
aid in obtaining marble head-stones to
mark the graves of Southern soldiers in
terred in the Confederate Cemetery at
Fredericksburg. The special appeal is
as follows :
The Ladies' Memorial Association of
Fredericksburg, Va., respectfully call
your attention to the fact that there lie
buried in our Confederate Cemetery
1,800 Southern soldiers from the follow
ing States : Maryland, Virginia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia,
Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisi
ana, Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee.
The wooden posts, with their names
on them, are rapidly decaying, and it is
necessary to replace them as soon as
possible. Having no means at our dis
posal for this purpose, we are compelled
to ask for aid, feeling sure that our ap
peal will not be in vain.
Many of these graves, which we have
lovingly cared for during so many years,
contain the dear ones of Southern
homes, where their memories are still
cherished; and a throb of sympathy will
go out to us in our efforts to rescue
their names from oblivion. Mothers,
widows, orphans, sisters and comrades,
help us in our sacred work, and we be
lieve that before another year we will
have money enough to begin our work.
If some responsible person in each city,
town and village will offer to receive
contributions for this cause, and will
forward them to Chas. Wallace, Esq.,
President 1st National Bank, Fredericks
burg, Va., we will be very grateful.
Mrs. Capt. J. N. Barney,
Sec'y Ladies' Memorial Association.
Of the eighteen hundred graves, two
hundred and forty cover the remains of
North Carolinians. And of all the States
mentioned above, Georgia alone has re
sponded and sent suitable head-stones to
mark the places of her dead. The mat
ter has quite recently been brought to
the attention of ladies of this city who
will do all they can to raise means suffi
cient to supply head-stones for a part, if
not all of the graves.

we come off victorious.
All thinking people who investigate these matters
