Counting in the last steal from Virginia the Republicans have a ma jority of fourteen in the House of Representatives now and Tom Reed contemplates his work with satisfac tion and feels like a big Injun with a whole lot of scalps hanging to his belt. Some Northern writer is giving his views on the ' Perfect Newspaper." When the man is discovered who discovers a "perfect newspaper," or discovers how to make it, we would I ke to make a contract with him and put him on exhibition as the great est living curiosity extant. If Chicago is the place where thieves, gamblers and crooks do congregate now, which they say it is, and hold high carnival, won't it be an elyseum for them when the World's Fair opens. But then Chicago has been a Republican city; it may reform since it has joined the Democratic fold. Senator Edmunds had better be turning his attention to the Scandi navian dialects if he wants to hang otf to his seat in the Senate. Those Scandinavian colonies which they are importing to fill up the waste places of Vermont won't have any use for a Senator who can't chin them in their own vernacular. It is said that Speaker Reed was educated for the ministry, but the devil got on such intimate terms with him before he was equipped for work in the moral vineyard that he became a Republican politician, and see what a shocking fellow he has turned out to be, boss of a gang of treasury raiders and seat thieves. 1 VOL. XLVI.-NO. 21. P. W. Davis of Elberton, Ga., rep resentative in the Legislature from Elbert county, has got himself into trouble by taking improper liberties with a young lady. First a kinsman of the lady, editor of the Elberton Gazttte, horsewhipped him on the public square, and then a number of prominent citizens called a meeting and passed resolutions requesting him to resign his seat in the Legisla ture and move out of the town and county. The way of the transgres sor is sometimes, if not all the time, hard. A rumor was given out some time ago that some admirer of Hon. Sam uel J. Randall, who knew how poor he was, started a subscription to a fund which reached $50,000 to pro vide for his family after his death. This movement was kept a secret from Mr. Randall, who it was known would have refused his consent if he had known it. It now appears that this friend was George W. Childs, the benevolent and big-hearted pro prietor of the Philadelphia Ledger. There is a split in Alf Taylor's district in Tennessee. He got a re nomination, whereupon his disgust ed Republican opponents bolted and nominated another man. It is about time that a bolt of some kind had struck the man that could make as fulsome a speech in flattery of Autocrat Reed as he did on the floor of the House in Reed's pres ence. What a nice time the school boys have now compared with what they used to have in the old fogy times of the past. They don't have to wear themselves out by writing com positions, essays, orations, &c, to shine on commencement days, but bv enclosing a little cash to an Ohio firm can get them by mail done up to order with lots of grand flourish. We regret that Col. J. D. Cameron has severed his connection with the Ashcville Citizen, the diversity of views between him and the proprie tor, Mr. huller, rendering tms step necessary. It is to be hoped that if Mr. Fuller proposes to assume the editorship that he will prove as level- leaded and able as Col. Cameron. The Older the Better. D anbury Reporter. Agreeable to our notion of thinking the Wilmington Star grows better as it grows older, like old wine and well the older the better. N. C, WEDNESDAY, RAILROAD CELEBRATION COMMEMORATIVE OF THE OPENING OF THE C. F. & Y. V. R. R. Arrival of Hundreds of Visitors from the TJp-Country A. Gala Occasion The City Decorated with Flags and Bunting. The enthusiasm with which the busi ness men and people generally of our city took hold of the idea of a grand ex cursion to our city of the merchants along the line of the C. F. & Y. V. road, in commemoration of the completion of this most important route, connecting the Piedmont sectio nof our State with the principal seaport.presaged a complete success for this scheme. This is truly a gala day for our city it is tne nrst time sne nas naa an op portunity to throw open her gates to the people of that section of the State through which the C. F. & Y. V. road runs. She has now thrown wide her doors and extended to them a cordia invitation. The invitation has been ac cepted in the same spirit in which it was given, and we now have among us seve ral hundred of the leading business men of the towns along the line of this road, who have come among us to enjoy our hospitality and to investigate and find out for themselves the advantages that Wilmington offers to them as a whole sale market. This excursion will be of great benefit to our city. It will unite in close friendship the two sections of the State It will tend to obliterate that imaginary line that divides our State into the "east" and the "west." It will show to the people of the Piedmont section that Wilmington has advantages as a whole sale market and supply depot for the in terior that perhaps very few of those on this excursion were, aware of before coming among us on this occasion Such intercourse between the two sec tions of the State should be of frequent occurrence, as conducive to the welfare and business prosperity of both sections, the decorations. Many of our business men were busy yesterday decorating their buildings and by evening the city had put on quite a holiday appearance and beautiful flags and bunting were displayed to great ad vantage on many of the principal streets. Conspicuous for this profuse and beau tiful decoration were the hotels Orton and Purcell, great taste having been dis played in the externel, decorations of these two buildings and within the office and saloon of the latter. On Water street, near the railroad depot, the buildings of of the Gleaves Hardware Company and Mr. R. W. Hicks were most artistically decorated and in a manner to attract the attention of the excursionists as they passed out of the depot. Many other business houses were beautifully decorated for the occasion, Without discriminating we mention the following as handsomely decorated: G. R. French & Son, I. Shrier, Bank of New Hanover, First National Bank, Holmes & Watters, A. David, stein & Co., S. H. Fishblate, & Roddick, Wilmington Factory, J. J. Hedrick. Rhein Brown Candy Giles & 'Murchison, J. C. Stevenson, H. C. Prempert, Sol. Bear & Co., Brid- gers x Kankin, Aiaerman, rianner x Co., the Gem restaurant, John L. Boat wright, Munson & Co., Chestnut & Bar rentine, R, M. Mclntire, E. J. Powers, Huske & Draper, W. T. Daggett, S. A. Schloss, Kirkham & Co., A. W. Watson, Warren & Son, P. Heinsberger, S. W. Sanders & Co., Worth & Worth, the Wilmington Paper Co., L. T. Bowden, B. F. Keith, Alexander Sprunt & Son, J. Naumbergf. The Star building was made con spicuous by appropriate decorations of flags and colored bunting. The piazza of the building just above the Star building was prettily decorated with festoons of handsome handker chiefs. Most prominent among the decora tions of the city was the beautiful dis play of flags by the revenue cutter Col fax, under command of Capt. Moore, which had her rigging trimmed with bright flags of various kinds. the arrival. By G o'clock quite a large crowd of citizens had gathered at the C. F. & Y. V. wharf to witnes's the arrival of the excursionists, who reached the railroad terminus in a train ot two sections, ar riving, the first at 5.10 and the other at 6.30, and were brought over to the city on the steamers Compton and Murchison, the revenue cutter firing a salute of fif teen guns as the steamers were crossing the river. Both steamers were crowded and when they touched the wharf there em barked from them about four hundred of the principal merchants and business men of Mount Airy, Greensboro and other towns along the line of the rail road. As each man stepped ashore he was handed a handsome silk badge upon which was inscribed, "Guest to the C. F. & Y. V. Railroad Celebration, April 16th and 17th, 1890." The train this morning, it is expected, will bring to the city about two hundred more excursionists who preferred to postpone their coming until to-day, in NO- APRIL;16, 1890. order to avoid the crowded cars of yes terday. This is no excursion of "rollicking, frolicing men," solely "on pleasure;" but it is composed of the substantial mer chants and men of business and of capi tal from the section of country that has been put into close communication with our city by the completion of the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley road, and it is hoped their visit will cement those ties of business and friendly intercourse which should exist between all sections of our State. To each and every one of them the Star extends a hearty welcome, with the hope that their visit to our city will be one of unalloyed pleasure. C. F. & Y. V? CELEBRATION.
