The McKinley tariffites in Con gress profess to take- great interest in the farmer, as illustrated by the protective duty they have imposed on eggs and beans, the bounty on" cocoons, &c, but they sat down solid on the proposition of Mr. McMillin, of Tennessee, to put ammonia on the free list. Ammonia is imported principally for the manufacture of fertilizers used by farmers. They doubtless concluded that the farmer was unreasonable in asking this when he was offered a protective du ty on beans, eggs, &c, a bounty on cocoons, and diamonds on the free list. Senator Frye, the ship-subsidy boomer, says he has assurances that within six months after the passage of the subsidy bills, there will be several new lines of ocean steamers running. Not unlikely. It is a very easy matter for enterprising men to run ocean steamers when Uncle Sam foots the bill and gives them the profits. There are some daisy pension de cisions rendered these days. The latest, a few days ago, gives a pen sion to the widow of a man who was drafted in Ohio in 1864 and died be fore he was mustered into service. It wasn't certain whether he died from "cramps" or from a knock on the head received in a row. Ross gave an exhibition of his skill with the oars and McFall, the champion log roller as he is called, interested and amused the crowd with the agility he displayed and the tricks he performed on his unique craft. The programme advertised was fully carried out, and was concluded about 7 o'clock by a grand pyrotechnic display from Boyton's raft. The performers left for Brunswick, Ga., last night, where they .are billed for an exhibition. RAIN AND ELECTRICITY. A Severe Storm Yesterday Morning Sig nal Office Report. The rainfall in Wilmington for the twenty-four hours ended at 6 p. m. yes terday amounted to 2.12 inches. Nearly all of it fell between midnight and 3 a. m. The storm was accompanied by a great deal of electricity, and it is rather re markable that no other damage resulted than the setting fire to Mr. A. D. Brown's residence, (elsewhere reported.) Telegraphic and telephone wires were affected. At the Western, Union office balls of fire were dancing around the operating room, and at the Electric Light Works, in the southern part of the city, the manifestations were so great that the workmen were compelled for a time to leave the building. The cotton region bulletin reported rain at all the stations in this district, the rainfall at Newbern amounting to 1.10 inches, at Charlotte, 0.74; Raleigh, .06; Wadesboro, .27; Lumberton, .70; Weldon, .13; Goldsboro, .45; Cheraw, .64; Florence, .50. The Residence of Mr. A. D. Brown Set on Fire During the Storm Yesterday Morn ing. During the violent storm early yester day morning the residence of Mr. A. D. Brown, on Fifth street near Orange, was set on fire by lightning. It was about half-past two o'clock when the fire was discovered. Mr. Brown's family were aroused and the Fire Department summoned by an alarm turned in from box No. 42. and engines, trucks and hose reels of the Department turned out promptly at the summons and the fire men succeeded in extinguishing the flames. The fire had made considerable headway, however, and there was lack of water pressure from the fire hydrants, and building and furniture were greatly damaged before the flames were finally overcome. The lightning ignited the cupola on the building and the fire had been burning a half hour or more, pro bably, before it was discovered. It is said that the lack of water supply was due to the fact that the bell at the pump ing station connected with the fire-alarm failed to give the signal. All the furni ture in the building was damaged by water and some of it ruined. The house was insured for $2,500 in the Oneida, of Hartford, Conn., Messrs. At kinson & Manning agents; and $1,500 in the North American, with Messrs. Nor throp, Hodges & Taylor. There was also insurance on the furniture for $2,000 in the Connecticut, with Messrs. Smith & Boatwright. There is no es timate of the loss; but will probably be covered by the insurance. THE GRANDLODGE. A telegram was received from the Grand Lodge of Alabama, now in ses sion, extending fraternal greetings to the Grand Lodge of North Carolina, and a telegram was sent in reply making proper acknowledgment of the courtesy. At midnight the Grand Lodge, having concluded its labors, adjourned sine die, after a vote of thanks to the Knights of Pythias for the use of their hall, and to the people of Wilmington for courtesies received. Most of the visiting members will take their departure for home to-day, but the Grand Master and the Grand Secretary will remain over to appoint district deputies. New York Truck Market.
