Mr. Wanamaker is studying up a system of pneumatic tubes as a means of communication between tne government buildings in Wash ington, l his suggests an idea. Congressmen complain that their time is very much taken up padding from one department to an other looking after claims of constituents, &c- When Mr. Wanamaker has hie tubes constructed let him have them made large enough to put a con gressman in and scoot him from one department to the other in a jiffy and thus save his valuable time. In that way the hustling member might do them all before noon and give the rest of the day to the service of the country at large. And then may be the Congressmen might get along without clerks. General Middleton, an officer of high rank, commander of the Cana dian militia, has been convicted of stealing $5,000 or $6,000 worth ot furs, during the Northwest rebellion, and it is expected that he will resign. He should cross the line and join the Republican party, where little indis cretions like that don't affect a man's standing so much nor his running for office either. Superintendent Porter says that the census to be worth anything must be absolutely above suspicion. Mr. Porter is correct. But unfortu nately the bibulous talk of some Re publicans who are supposed to know something, has brought the census under suspicion already. Mr. Proc tor should keep both eyes open to see that these suspicions may not be verified. Mr. Charles Carroll Carlton charges Senator Ingalls with steal ing a large portion of his eulogy on Representative Burns from Massil- lon's sermon on immortality, and produces the extracts in proof. In galls candidly owns up, but thinks it was very mean for Carlton to say anything about it. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Weuster's Dictionary. Munson Bathing suits, etc. Star Office Babbitt metal. M. H. Service Proposals wanted. John S. McEachern Cow peas, etc. W.J. KIRK.HAM&CO. Auc'n to-night Rev. C. L. Arnold. The Caucasian, of Clinton, noticing the series of sermons preached in that town by Rev. C. L. Arnold, of this city, on the fundamental doctrines of Christ, says: The subject of the last sermon was "Why J am an fc-piscopaiian. the church was litej"al!y crowded, not only the seats full but also chairs in the aisles. While the great bulk of the congrega tion was composed of Baptists, Metho dists, Presbyterians and "tree think ers," vet every one gave the closest at tention, while he feelingly, eloquently and logically stated the position of the Church and gave his reasons for the faith that is in him. He is not by any means a high churchman; we might almost call him a John Wesley Episcopalian, an evangelist; and if the Church had a dozen such men in this diocese its membership would be doubled within a twelve month. He won the hearts of our peo ple not only from the pulpit but socially as well. Rain and Lightning. There was a heavy rain storm yester- dav about 2 o'clock p. m. It lasted but a short time yet the down-pour flooded the streets, choked drains with debris and caused many washouts in low-lying sections of the city. The street hands were kept busy during the afternoon re pairing the damage. During the storm lightning struck the tall brick chimney at the rice mill on Point Peter, opposite the city, sending up a cloud of dust and scattering a few of the bricks, but no other damage resulted. The cotton region bulletin issued from the Signal office reports the total rainfall here at 73-hundredths of an inch. Lumberton reported .42 and Raleigh .01. Thank You, Boys. An accident to our press yesterday morning necessitated a call on our neigh bors, Messrs. Jackson & Bell, for the use of their press. Mr. Jackson, with characteristic courtesy, got out of bed at 2 o'clock a. m., and came down to the office in order to accommodate us. We tender our thanks to our friends whose timely aid enabled us to issue the Star, but two hours behind our usual time. Larceny of Money. Fred. Gadsden was arrested yesterday on complaint of Samuel White, who charged Gadsden with the larceny ot m ft $5.50. Both men are coiorea ana sauorb on the schooner Sarah C. Smith. The News aud Observer says : "We have read with much interest the elo quent address of Major Stedman on Memorial Day at Wilmington, The ad dress is replete with historical incidents, and is a worthy tribute to the brave Clan MacRae, whose ancient fame Gen. Wil liam MacRae so splendidly maintained in his day and generation. We have seldom read an address with more gen uine gratification. Gen. MacRae was indeed all the chivalrous Stedman de scribed him, and he is fortunate in hav ing such a capable orator to sketch his daring deeds and portray his fine char acteristics. In particular must we com mend Major Stedman for his admirable account of the battle of Ream's Station, where North Carolina was so signally successful and her valor obtained such ample recognition from the lion-hearted Lee." Crop Prospects in Richmond. Mr. S. W. Bostick, of Bostick's Mills, Richmond county, writing of the crop prospects there, says: "Wheat and oats have the appearance of being almost an entire failure up to this date. Corn is growing finely, but cotton is somewhat backward, owing to the dry cool weath er, we nad some irost on tne vtn ana 8th insts." The Lutheran Young People's Association will give one of their en joyable excursions to Carolina Beach, next Friday, May 23rd. A BEWILDERED PRESBYTERIAN. Editor Star: I am a Presbyterian, and, of course, interested in the pro ceedings of that venerable body now as sembled at Asheville. In the report of the opening of the Assembly, as tele graphed, there seems to be a remarkable state of affairs. It says Dr. Hs G, Hill (meaning, we suppose, Rev. H. G. Hill, D. D.) sang the long metre doxology, and made a prayer and preached a ser mon that 129 commissioners were on hand and letters of regret were re ceived from a number of distinguished persons, including Messrs. G. W. Wil liams and B. F. Hall and Rev. Peyton H. Hoge, of Wilmington. As these gentlemen are not commissioners to the Assembly they would hardly write let ters of regret. What does it mean? Is the air of Asheville responsible for this conduct of so grave a body as the Gen eral Assembly? It reminds one ot "Mr. Bloker's Item" in Mark Twain's Sketch Book. I think, perhaps, there is a way to ac count for it. There was a banquet at the Battery Park Hotel, and as things get mixed at banquets, possibly the As sembly proceedings and the banquet be came mixed or the Associated Press or its agent, or the brother who sent the ac count, became mixed. The account says Dr. Park was elect ed Moderator. You don't suppose it was the Battery Park do you, Mr. Edi tor ? I cannot believe the Assembly made Dr. Hill sing the L. M. doxology by himself. Hoping that later returns will relieve our minds, I am A Bewildered Presbyterian. The Churches. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, corner Fourth and Campbell street, Rev. John W. Primrose, Pastor.
