Narrow Escape of a Little Child. The dwelling of Messrs. S. and B. Sol- omon, on ftiaricet Detween aixtn anu Seventh streets, was discovered to be on ar a r - 1 J fire last night about half-past 8 o'clock. The fire was in a bed-room in the second story of the building, and was caused by a gas-jet igniting a window curtain. The flames were extinguished by people in the neighborhood with buckets of water before much damage was done beyond burning some of the furniture in the room. CRIMINAL COURT. The May Term for New Hanover Con vened Yesterday. The Criminal Court for New Hanover county convened yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, with Judge O. P. Meares presiding, and Solicitor B. R. Moore prosecuting attorney. 1 he grand iury tor the term was drawn as follows: A. J. Grady, fore man, W. F. Furplass, Jas. W. King, S. M. Moody, R. M. Mclntire, R. M. Fow ler, D. C. Davis, W. M. Hays, Jr., F. C. Sadgwar, Elijah Hardison, J. W. Ful- chcr, B. F. Keith, Jr. John Cromartie, colored, charged with larceny stealing a hog was tried, found guilty and sentenced to three years in the penitentiary. J. J. Burnett and John G. Black, in dicted for an affray, were found guilty; Burnett was fined a penny and costs; Black, five dollars and costs. Case of J. E. Humphrey, charged with selling liquor on Sunday, was continued to the July term. Also, case of David Moore, charged with violation of the city ordinance against fast driving, brought on appeal from the Mayor's Court. At G p. m. I Me MAY 20, 1890. Cotton Eesion Bulletin. The Cotton Region Bulletin reports rain yesterday in all the districts very heavy in the Little Rock, Memphis Mobile and Montgomery districts. In this district there were moderate rains at Charlotte, Wadesboro, Lumberton, Cheraw and Florence. The maximum temperature at Goldsboro and Cheraw was 99, at Lumberton 88, at Raleigh, Weldon and Florence 86, at Charlotte and Newbern 84, and at Wadesboro and Wilmington 82 Horner School. The Star returns thanks to Messrs W. R. Kenan, Jr.. and J. D. Bellamy, Jr., 3rd., for an invitation to attend the 39th annual celebration of the Franklin Literary Society, Horner School, on May29th. By the way the Wilmington boys seem to be carrying off a goodly share of the honors this session. T. D. Bellamy is the orator, Robert C. DeRos- set is the chief marshal, and R. D.
