Ol While the Republican tariff boos ters in the House are trying to make us believe that this country is on the top wave of prosperity, all bronght aoout by the high protective tariff. the Republican Senators who are ad vocating free coinage of silver are maintaining that the country is go ing to the demnition bow-wows be cause silver has not been recognized as it should be. There is a lack of harmony between the Republican House tariff boomers and the Re publican Senate silver boomers. They should come together, talk this matter over, and have an under standing before they get this thing so awfully mixed. When a goat becomes thoroughly demoralized and resolves to go on the rampage there is no telling what disturbance and dire consequences he may bring to a peaceful community. One of the William pursuasion con cluded he would make things lively in the town of Goshen, Ohio, and succeeded so far that he broke the legs of several horses and cows, came near breaking the neck of a consta ble who rashly undertook to arrest him, when the citizens formed an al liance offensive and defensive, de clared war and shot him dead. The Louisville Courier- Journal thinks if criminals are to be sent out of this world through the agency of electricity electroccision, a sort of a cutting off, as it were, would be a better word to express that opera tion tnan electrocution, wnicn is nonsense, niectroccision is undoubt edly a better word but Kemmler won't like one a bit better than the other. Senator Ingalls says he could have prevented that exposure of his lar ceny of Massillon's sermon if he had paid the price demanded, $500, which he thought too much. He would rather be caught cribbing from three sermons than nay that much money. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Muxsons-Nobby suits. Star Office Babbitt metal. Masonic Meeting Orient Lodge. M feting County Dem. PRIZE WINNERS. THE WILMINGTON LIGHT INFANTRY. Victors in the Competitive Brill at Char loixe Jf reparations to u-ive - Them a Housing Reception on their Return to the City. The Wilmington Light Infantry won the first prize in the competitive drill which took place yesterday morning at Charlotte. Telegrams announcing their triumph in the contest were received here early in the evening with much re joicing by the friends of the Company, and preparations were soon on foot to give the Light Infantry a rousing recep tion on their return to Wilmington this mornina at 8.00 o'clock. The competing companies were the Wilmington Light Infantry, the Gov ernor's Guards of Raleigh, Reidsville Light Infantry, Monroe Light Infantry, and Hornet's Nest Riflemen of Char lotte. The judges were Lieut. J. B. Hughes, U. S. Army, Lieut. Stewart Cramer, United States Army, and B. H Bronson, U. S. Signal Service. The drill took place at the base ball grounds at 9 o'clock, in the presence of a vast concourse of people. A special to the Star from Charlotte says: -'lhe judges were thoroughly disinterested parties United States Army officers and the award of prizes was made strictly upon excellence in executing military tactics. Infantry at the Carolina Central depot at 8 o'clock this morning, and the "Atlantic," "'Adrian" and Hook and Ladder Companies will be on hand to receive them. The Germania Cornet Band has also kindly agreed to be present and will fur nish music on this occasion. All of our citizens generally, if possible, should meet our soldier boys, and there is no doubt that they will receive a royal and enthusiastic welcome. Captain Kenan deserves great credit for the pains he has taken to perfect his company in military tactics, and the members have shown most conclusively how well they have profited by his in structions. Wilmington is proud of the Wilmington Light Infantry, and well she may be. for there is not a cleverer or more manly set of boys in North Caro lina. UP-COUNTRY VISITORS.
