Jack the Ripper has retired from business in London, and Jack the Hair Clipper has suspended opera tions in New York, but Jack the Kisser has come to the front in Washington and is creating conster nation among the young women, married and single, who don't like to be suddenly pounced upon and kissed by a man they don't know. The police have been on the look out for him, but so far he has eluded them. It is reported that Mr. Harrison has said that he will not sign any silver bill or any other bill that de pends on Democratic votes to pass it. There must be some mistake about this. It is known that Mr. Harrison is a very narrow-minded partisan, but he certainly would not undertake to run his office on this idiotic plane. The Kansas Farmery the leading agricultural paper of Kansas, re spectfully declines to support Sena tor Ingalls for re-election. It thinks the farmers of that State will be as well or better represented by some man who don't part his hair in the middle or purloin the sermons of dead men. Ben Butterworth was a pretty big man after he delivered that brave speech against the McKinley bill, but he ''swunk" fearfully and became awfully dwarfed when he let himself be whipped in to vote for it on its final passage. The racket he raised scared him out of his manhood. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Star Office Babbitt metal. Ml nson & Co Good clothing. University of Va. Law lectures. Kikkham & Co. Auction to-night. SHE SAVED THE TRAIN. A Brave Young Lady of Greensboro. A young lady of Greensboro, one of the students at the Female College in that place, with rare presence of mind pre vented what might have been a serious "smash-up" on the C. F. & Y. V. rail road on Tuesday last. Three or four box-cars had been left standing on the main track near the siding close to the College, and the train for Mount Airy was rapidly approaching in that direc tion. The young lady mentioned Miss Alderman seeing that a collision was inevitable unless the train was stopped, snatched a red shawl from one of her companions, and with this improvised 'danger signal" waved the train down in time to prevent a collision. It is said that officers and employes of the road have united in preparations for a fitting testimonial to be presented to the young lady, in recognition of the forethought and timely action that saved the train from disaster. CHARLOTTE'S CELEBRATION. Firemen's Contest The Atlantics of New- bern Victors in the Engine Trial- Greensboro Awarded the State Cham pionship Medal. Charlotte Neivs. May 22d. t. , . i-i To-day S programme, While not SO elaborate as yesterday's, was decidedly interesting, consisting of engine con tests. The contest took place from the cistern in front of the court house, and was between the Newbern and Monroe engines. Both engines are of the Silsby make, and are beauties as well as superb work. Both were fired up at the same-time, and at three minutes and twenty-seven seconds from the time smoke appeared from the stack of the Atlantic engine, of Newbern, that engine threw a stream fifty feet. An exhibition of water throwing then followed, and it was a pretty sight to witness. Monroe's engine did some fine work and spit just a little bit further than Newbern's. After that there was an ex hibition hose reel race by the Rescue company of Raleigh. The distance was 300 vards. The first run was made in GO seconds and the second run in 56 seconds. There was somewhat of a row over the awarding of the State championship medal yesterday afternoon. Ihe judges decided that Lrreensboro had won it, while Raleigh disputed the decision and held to the medal. It is a gold medal costing $150 and was offered by Raleigh. Last year Raleigh won it. She claimed to have won it yesterday. The rule is that the company that wins it three times is to keep it. Ihis explains Kal- eigh's anxiety about the matter. In the face of the judges' decision Raleigh's team left this morning and carried the medal with them. To-dav the judges met and decided finally that the medal was won by Greensboro and Raleigh was telegraphed to to send the medal to the Greensboro team, Wilmington District Xlilrd Round Quarterly Itlcctlnss In Part.
