XLVI.-NO. 78, There is much complaint in the press North and South, of the defec tiveness of the census. The Nor folk, Virginia, Landmark, complains of the loose way in which the work was done in that city; the Augusta, Georgia, Chronicle, as an illustration, states that out of. a party of six gen tlemen casually thrown together, five of them had not been seen bv the enumerators; and the Memphis Commercial pronounces the enumer ation in that city "a farce." The city of Fort Worth, Texas, don't pro pose to trust to Mr. Porter's enumer ators, but has employed men to make a thorough canvass of the city and thus list the inhabitants the enumer ators have skipped. It is evident that there is some great and mighty unpleasantness be tween Hon. John Sherman and Hon. Matthew S. Quay. This is to be deplored. When the. mighty chief tains of a big party get to showing a disposition to claw at each other's vitals it is calculated to mar the hap piness and throw a cloud over the happy family. In view of the many perplexities which now harass the g. o. p. this is sad. Guy Turner, city treasurer, of Au gusta, Maine, attempted suicide last January. He failed in this, but died the other day from brain trouble and starvation, refusing for some time to take any food and for the past two weeks refusing anything but an oc casional glass of water. He had a hallucination that he was a defaulter but an examination of his books showed that they were clean and hon estly kept. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Star Office Babbitt metal. The usual Sabbath services of Grace M. E. Church will be conducted to-morrow whether the bells ring or not, as a case of sickness in the immediate neighborhood may prevent their being rung. At the Grand Lodge, Knights of Pythias, Durham. N. C., F. S. Jacobs was elected G. V. C; W. B. Harker, G. P., and G. C. Holton G. O. G. Other officers elected were as published in the bi'AR yesterday. Tho Onslow Railroad to be Extended to Newbern. Mr. H. C. Whiting, the manager of the Wilmington, Onslow & East Caro lina Railroad, returned a day or two ago from a visit to New York. He re ports that it is the purpose of the Com pany to extend the road to Newbern, and that a surveying party will be sent out as soon as possible to select a route. The track from Wilmington has been laid for a distance of sixteen miles, and is steadily progressing. To facilitate the work an additional engine and cars have been ordered, and further shipments of steel rails have been made. It is expected that the road will be pushed through to Jacksonville by the Fall.- Band Concert at the Hammocks. The following programme will be rendered by Professor Miller's Band at the Hammocks this afternoon: 1. March "National Fencibles" J. P. Sousa. 2. Caprice "Oddette" F. P. Brooke. 3. The "W. & "W. Kailroad Shops. The Weldon News says: Tt i5 rumored that Manaeer Walters, of rViP." Atlantic Coast Line, is contem plating the removal of the railroad shops from Wilmington to Rocky Mount, and that the citizens of the latter place have offered land for the buildings. . i .i l Rocky Mount is aDOut nau-way uetwecu R ichmond ana vvumingion. The above is altogether a mistake. The Company have had under consider ation the removal of the shops ot tne Norfolk & Carolina road from forts- mouth to Rocky Mount; and this, no doubt, has given rise to the above re port. C, SATURDAY, CAPE FEAR ACADEMY. Closing Exercises Distinctions Award ed, Etc. The Cape Fear Academy closed its seventeenth session yesterday morning, The pupils have been undergoing an ex amination for the past week and have shown excellent progress in their studies, which must be gratifying alike to teachers, pupils and parents. Prof. Catlett, after a closing address to the pupils, awarded certificates of dis tinction to the following pupils, their names coming in the order of excellence First Class W. L. Latta, F. R. Rus sell, E. T. Huggins. Second Class C. H. Schulken, Louis Cutlar, Henry Bear, Thos. W. Davis, S. Greenberg, H. B. Peschau, C. K. Bacon. F. Pearsall, G. A. Heide, F. Donlan, Jno. Wessell, R. Schulken, Fred Pearsall and W Latta received only one demerit during the entire year. John Wessell and W. W. Vick have never been late. The popularity of this school has con tinually increased and the session has added another successful year. Prof. Catlett is doing a noble work in Wilmington, and the prosperous condi tion of his school attests the estimation in which he is held by our citizens as an educator. He has prepared many of our young men for college and numbers of them have taken high stand and reflect great credit on their old tutor. PRIZE SHOOTING.
