VOL. XLVL NO..80. Heligoland, concerning the cession of which by England to Germany. in consideration of certain cessions of territory in Africa by Germany to England, concerning which there is much talk in Europe, is a little strongly fortified rocky island in the North sea, about twenty miles from the mouths of the Elbe and Weser rivers, with an area of about five and a quarter square miles. It is a rocky, barren island, and only valu able as an important naval station, commanding the northwest coast of Germany, and is inhabited only by fish ermen. It has two good harbors, and belonged until 1807 to Denmark, when the English took possession of it. The anti-Salisburyites in Eng land don't like the trade, and when speaking of it invariably emphasize the first syllable of the name. The Louisiana Lottery has two competitors, a Mexican lottery and a German banker, who is said to be backed by the Rothschilds, who goes the Louisiana lottery folks $250,000 a year better on their 1,000,000, and instructs his agents when the L. L. comes up to these figures to raise them $250,000 more, and keep on raising $250,000 at each bid. This looks as if the L. L. iiad struck a snag with several big prongs to it. A respected contemporary asks if it has ever occurred to those who are crying for free silver that they would not have a dollar more if every vault in the country were filled with coined silver. No, not if it were kept in the vaults. But more silver will stimu late enterprise, give more employment and better wages and thus those who are crying tor free coinage will stand a chance of getting some more dol lars. It appears that they not only pay money for votes in Mr. Reed's dis trict but resort to the seductive powers of whiskey. Being located in a strong prohibition State this argues that Mr. Reed's district is very much demoralized. When a man starts out to climb the ladder of fame with a strong will, good musoles, and luck on his side, there is no telling how high he may go. A London firm has just named a brand of sausages in honor of Stanley. Of course the high tariff helps the American farmer. Mexico has ad vanced the duty on corn as an offset to the McKinley increase of duty on silver lead ore. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. Star Office Babbitt metal. P. O'Connor Cottage for rent. A Cotton Factory at LaG range -The Hot test Say. A correspondent of the Star writing from LaGrange, says that the sum of $13,000 has been subscribed to build a cotton factory at that place. Sunday, the 22d, was the hottest day of the season at LaGrange, the maxi mum temperature being 108 degrees. Bladen County Convention. Mr. J. C. Stanley, of Maysville, wri ting in reference to the Bladen County Democratic Convention held at Eliza bethtown (as reported m the STAR last Friday) says that the delegates from twelve oui oi mc im r i are for Col. Green, of Fayette ville, arrived in the city yesterday even ing. Rev. R. E. Peele will preach at Wooster Street Chapel this evening, at 8 o clock. An immense "The Hammocks" crowd went to and Wrightsville Beach Sunday. The State Dental Association will meet in this city to-day, holding its sessions at The Orton. The Superintendent of Streets is making improvements on Seventh be tween Market and Dock streets. Between four and five hundred citizens of Wilmington spent Sunday at the Hammocks and Ocean View. Business at the Oceanic Hotel, Carolina Beach, is increasing rapidly, but Mrs. Mayo is equal to the demand. Travel on the street railway since May 1, this year, has been at least fifty per cent, larger than for the same period last year. Thomas Patterson, colored, was fined ten dollars and costs in the Mayor's Court yesterday for carrying a concealed weapon. A female angler beat the crowd fishing at "The Rocks" yesterday. Her catch equalled, in weight, that of any two men who were there. The Health officers ask that citizens will cooperate with them in their efforts to keep up the good sani tary condition of the city. "Old Sol" painted the fishermen red yesterday. A pale young lady told one of them she would be delighted to swap complexions with him. A meeting of the retail liquor dealers will beheld at Adrian Hall, this evening at 8 o'clock. All wholesale liquor dealers in the city are invited to attend. Five coaches with colored ex cursionists from places along the Wif- mington & Weldon Railroad, arrived yesterday and went down to the Ham mocks over the Seacoast Railroad. The Sylvan Grove will make three trips to Carolina Beach to-morrow at 9.30 a. m., 2.30 p. m, and 5 p. m. Passengers by the 2 30 p. m. boat can return by the Passport at 5.30 p. m. The mercury was away up in the nineties yesterday. The maximum on the "wharf" was 90 degrees, but there was a fine breeze from the south west that made the day a pleasant one for all that. The statement that has ap peared in the papers that dance music would be provided at the excursion of the "Athanaium of the Y. M. C. A. to morrow, is a mistake. No such plans have been or will be made by the Atha nxum." At "The Rocks" yesterday a ittle boy came very near being pulled into the water by a large catfish that had taken his hook. The youngster had good tackle, however, and with the aid of a companion succeeded in landing his game. Oscar Stamps, colored, a pris oner at the County House of Correc tion, made his escape from that institu tion Sunday night, but was captured yesterday morning near the Poor House. He was in for five months and has served but one month of his sentence. Death of Mrs. George P. Cochett. The death of Mrs. Cochett, wife of Mr. George P. Cochett. which occurred unday last from a congestive chill, was great shock to her family and friends. She leaves five children, the youngest only ten days old. The funeral took place yesterday evening from St. James' Church, the interment being in Oakdale Cemetery. It was attended by many sorrowing relatives and friends. Mrs. Cotchett was the daughter of the late Col. James G. Green, and was greatly beloved for her many estimable quali ties. The deepest sympathy is felt by lany for her husband and lamily in their sad bereavement. Fishermen's Day. About 125 persons went down to the Rocks" and the Blackfish Grounds yes terday on the Sylvan Grove, the steamer eavini? at 6 a. m. and returning aoout the same hour in the evening. The fish ermen report good sport at the "Rocks" and some fine fish caught. 1 he nsning outside at the Blackfish Grounds was not so good, the sea being rough with a high wind; but nevertheless some ot the party caught a good many fish. Fine Crops in Brunswick. Mr. J. W. Cannon, of Shallotte, sends the STAR a cotton bloom, plucked J une 18th from the farm of Solomon Hewett. Vice President Bentley Says it is a Bluff, Nothing More. The report that suits had been entered against the Three C's road which would affect its ownership was published for what it was worth. The Charleston News and Courier says a telegram has been received in that city from Vice President Bentley, of the Three C's road, in Cincinnati, stating that there was nothing m the report, and that he considered it a "bluff." It appears that the suit contemplated does not in any way affect the ownership of the road, being merely a claim for compensation. NATIONAL CEMETERY. Mr. McQammy'a Bill for a Macadamized Koadway. Mayor Fowler has received a letter from Hon. Chas.M.McClammy, member of Congress from the Third District, stating that he (Major McClammy) is satisfied that the bill introduced by him for an appropriation of $7,500 for a ma cadamized road to the National Ceme tery will pass both Houses this session, and he expects the amount will be in creased by the Senate, The bill pro vides for the extension of the road from Fourth street to the Cemetery.
