We don't doubt her pluck, but there is a suspicious look in the statement that Draves had a hankering for soan. There must have been some strange revolutions out in that countrv when the noble red man manifests an interest in soap. He found the women at the house badly scared, and went under the house and pulled out his robber, who wanted to know what he had done, and why a man who was tired could not get a little sleep if he wanted it? Joe found it was a man who was working on the premises, resting from his labors, and went home sadly disappointed at losing both sleep and reward. Arrested in New Orleans. Postmaster G. Z. Annual Meeting of Farmers' Alliance at Ashevllle. Several delegates from the Farmers' Alliance meeting at Asheville returned last night and express themselves as well pleased with their visit. All of the old officers were re-elected, with one or two exceptions. Many changes were made in the organic law of the order, so that the State constitu tion would conform with the national. Mr. H. E. King, of Onslow, an officer of the State Alliance, made a strong ap peal for Wilmington as the next annual meeting place, and this nomination was seconded by Capt. S. W. Noble in a short but pointed speech, and had the question been agitated a little earlier Wilmington would have undoubtedly been chosen. As it was the vote stood: Morehead 43, Wilmington 37, Greens boro 21. The Carolina Inter-State Building and Loan Association Capital Stock Five Millions Officers Elected, Etc. The organization of the Carolina In ter-State Building and Loan Association of this , city has just been completed, under the auspices and direction of some of the most reputable and promi nent gentlemen of the community. The association proposes to place agents in every one of the Southern States as soon as possible, and to establish local branches throughout the country. It is to do an inter-state business and the success of this one under the conservative and able management of the gentlemen who com pose its directors and officials may be said to be assured. At a meeting held by the stockholders here the following directors were cho sen, viz: John W. Atkinson, H. M. Bow den, W. H. Green, J. R. Kenly, Berry Gleaves, Isaac Bates, Iredell Meares, E. S. Tennent, Chas. E. Borden. After this the directors met and elect ed the officers, which are: J. W. Atkin son, President; H. M. Bowden, Vice President; E. S. Tennent, Secretary, Charles E. Borden, Treasurer; Iredell Meares, General Attorney; John S. Wat- ters, Superintendent of Agencies. Mr. John S. Watters will in a few days call upon citizens to solicit subscriptione and explain the workings of the Asso ciation. The capital stock, to be accu mulated, will be five million dollars, and this no doubt will direct the eves of many to Wilmington, for the whole management will be in our city, and it will tend to give to this place great com mercial importance. IMPROVEMENT IN TELEGRAPHY. An Important Invention by Mr. R. J. Mcllhenny, of Wilmington, N. C. The Star some time since gave a description of an important invention in telegraphic instruments made by Mr. Richard J. Mcllhenny, of this city, and yesterday the attention of a reporter for the paper was called to new instruments embodying this invention placed in the office of the Western Union Telegraph Company. In telegraphic nomenclature these instruments are known as "re pealers," and the purpose they serve is to increase the current, acting as an extra motive power or force for the transmission of messages over long dis tances. Mr. John Bragg, the Associated Press operator, has had these instruments working every night for several months on the Wilmington and Jacksonville Press Circuit from which all cities copy at one time and he finds them, as he says, the most superb instruments ever used, and at the same time the most simple; so that the most ordinary oper ator could soon comprehend them. Mr. Bragg, a few nights since got some of the principal operators in Washing ton interested in the workings of the new repeaters, repeating back to them some of the Associated Press reports. They were much pleased, remarking that every dot and dash was perfect, and expressed a lively anxiety for the suc cess of Mr. Mcllhenny's invention. Mr. C. C. Brown, an experienced tele grapher, and Manager of the Western Union office here, is much pleased with the new instruments, and says that in his opinion Mr. Mcllhenny's repeaters are superior to any now in use. It is claimed for them that they work smoother and firmer, are not as compli cated, require less attention, and will effect a saving in cost of cells of local battery and labor of keeping in order, amounting to twelve dollars a year with every set used. KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS. The Amplified Third Degree to be Con ferred Wednesday Night.
