The Reuublicans of the House of Rep resentatives are endeavoring to secure united action with a view to continuing the present session of Congress until the National Election bill is passed; a paper to tli is effect was circulated on the floor .,t the House yesterday, which received i large number of signatures. A hiht snow, the first of the season, fell at Denver, Colorado, Monday night. A i;rand court dinner was given by the Czar at Narva Monday evening; it was the anniversary of the birth of the Em peror of Austria, and toasts were pro posed to that sovereign by both the Czar and Emperor William. The conservative, business men of the North are getting sick of the Jrce bill talk. Sic transit. r.'iss Reed is so mad at Senator Ouay now that he wouldn't really be sorry if Quay had gone down to the i; oUom of the Susquehanna or some other stream. Too much benzine and a homicidal negro make a bad combination, as was shown in the case of the colored brother who ran amuck and waked up the town of Racine, Wis., last S inula v. 1 eserters" is what the force bill boiner:. i a!! Senator Quay, Cameron, riiimb and other Senators who are p;osed to that infamous measure, iuit the g. o. p. would be in a bad fix without these deserters. A Wisconsin man, now a resident of henmark, has invented an im provement in the printing press by which three or more different colors may be printed at the same impres sion. He is successfully introducing it in Europe. 'When employes of the Govern ment in Washington or in the cus toms service want leaves of absence, with pay, they have to get permis sion from Congress, but when Con gressmen want leaves of absence, with pay, they only ask themselves, and take it. Two fellows who carried their free coinage principles to the extent of putting ui a counterfeiting shop in1 Philadelphia were interrupted by secret service officers of the govern ment last Saturday while expanding the currency with some very nice im Nations of silver dollars which they were then engaged in making. When Mr. Quay gave notice Mon lla' of his intention to ask the Senate to take up his resolution in reference to the order of business, Mr- Hoar said "let it go over," and AIr. Edmunds, who seldom becomes facetious, remarked, "let it go un- er," in the same direction in which trie Republican party is going. VOL. XLVI.-NO. 128. In Sam Small's dodging around he has lost his church. He was a Meth odist, but when he applied for orders in the Episcopal church his name was dropped from the membership of the church, and when he an nounced himself a candidate for the legislature from Atlanta, the Episco pal church dropped him. When he was elected to the Presidency of the Methodist college in Utah and wrote to the Methodist church in Atlanta for papers transfering his member ship he discovered that he was with out a church and a religious waif, so to speak. Corporal Tanner and his mouth ware at the encampment of the G. A. R. at Boston last week. The Corpo ral made a speech in which he paid a high compliment to Southern women. If it hadn't been for the spirit they infused into the fight, he said, the Nonh would have triumphed in one fourth of the time. The Corporal should remember that it takes superb women to mother the kind of boys that bore the Stars and Bars through fire and blood and slaughter in those memorable days. The Post Office authorities are trying to settle the question, which comes up in the case of the Paducah, Ky., postmaster, who is charged with gambling, whether a man pan be a good Republican, a good postmaster and a good gambler at the same time. . He may be a success in all three, but he cant be "good" while he is addicted to the vices of Re publicanism or gambling. It is somewhat significant that the resolution endorsing Senator Vance in the Wake county Democratic Con vention was presented by the Secre tary of the State farmers' Alliance and unanimously adopted. The Al liance knows Senator Vance, and knows when it comes to champion all reasonable demands, it won't have to go out with a lantern to hunt him up. Renegade Chalmers thinks this re publican form of government is in danger of being over-ridden and trodden under foot by a Southern oligarchy. Gjood gracious! If they had given Chalmers Morgan's seat all this might be prevented, But were there only 31 out of 1C7 of those stupid fellows who could see it. Reed's side show had to cut short its performance again Monday be cause it didn't have men enough to fill the biU. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. J as. D. Nutt Lime water. Star Office Babbit metal. Persons who have tried to reconcile the varying records of the street ther mometers and the Signal Service office instruments may be glad to learn that even these variations follow a sort of rule. From 35 to 75s the thermometers keep pretty well together. About 75 the street thermometers begin to leave the government instrument behind, and the higher the temperature the greater is the variation. Similarly, below 35 the street records are lower than those of the Signal Service, the difference in creasing in proportion to the cold. K. of P. Excursion To-iy. AN APPEAL FOR HELP. A Disabled Confederate Veteran Suffer ing for the Necessaries of Life. Wilmington', August 18, 1890. Editor Star The following appeal for help comes from D. H, West, a gal lant Soldier of Company C. 3d North Carolina Infantry, as to whose condition a friend in Fayetteville, who is in a posi tion to know of which he writes, says: "Poor West is indeed a most pitiful case, so far as physical suffering is concerned. Still, his pension is quite liberal, all things considered. As to his eye-sight, I would say that he is very nearly blind. The sight is weak from long suffering and taking morphine. He is drawn out of shape from rheumatism and neural gia, and loss of sleep has -o doubt af fected his sight. He has a wife and three small children and none able to do more than wait upon him. Perhaps he exaggerates his necessities, but it would be impossible to exaggerate his physical condition.'' Any moneys intended for his relief will be gratefully received and forwarded by me. W. L. DeRosset. To the Citizens and Veterans of Wil mington: Dear Comrades and Friends As my circumstances compel me to beer, and as I am in a suffering condition for the necessaries of life, 1 come to you, dear friends, for help. To all that has got any feeling for suffering humanity or is sorry for a poor invalid Confeder ate soldier, I appealfor help. Do, dear comrades and friends give me a little as sistance in this trying hour of distress. bix years ago 1 had to take my bed and there I have been ever since. I have been down so long that I have exhaust ed all my means, and to-day am suffer ing both with my wounds and for the necessaries of life. Dear comrades, don't let me lie here and suffer in this condi tion after I have given the best of my days to my country and offered my life as a sacrifice to defend our homes and firesides from the invasion of our ene mies. Yes, here I lie in a helpless con dition, with my limbs all shrunken and my body in a terrible state of emacia tion, nothing but skin and bone, and with it all I am fast going blind, sinking down into darkness and no one to help me; penniless and poor I am, with noth ing to depend upon but the little pen sion the State gives me, and the charity of the good people of the State. Dear comrades and mends, my life is fast ebbing away, my days on earth are short, and I again appeal to you don't let me lie here and spend the remaining days of my life at the poor house or at the gates of starvation. Do if you please don't let me be sent to the poor house, much dreaded. Death is preferable, dear friends, and I hope that the good people of Wilmington and the State will pity my helpless condition and give me a little help. The citizens of Wilming ton seem dear to me; yes, God bless them ! There arc the Mearses, the Cowans, the Thurstons, the Cummings, the De Rossets, the Parsleys, Dr. Wood -O ! how glad I would be to see their faces once more; and besides those whose names 1 have mentioned there are in Wilmington many old members of the old Third N. C. S. troops; may God bless them! They are as dear to me as brothers; yes as fathers. There are ties of affection and love for each of them in my bosom that nothing can disturb but death. And now dear comrades and friends, in conclusion, may God bless you and may you live long is the heart felt wish of your afflicted comrade. D. H. West, Late Co. C, Third N. C. S. Troops.
