Congressman Cannon, of Illinois, seems to be an air again. If lard can raise such a rumpus in Congress, 'hat would a whole, thor oughly equipped hog do if it was turned loose? If you don't think hog's lard is a dangerous thing to fool with just see what a racket it raised in Con gress Wednesday. John L. Sullivan should not fore go his intention to run for Con ::;es ;. He might have shown to ad v iaiage there Wednesday. When Greek meets Greek then comes the tuor of war," but when lion's l.trd meets cotton seed oil then comes the bust of quorum. The Democrats in the Senate worked hard to get in some amend ments to the tariff bill Wednesday, !)tit failed by "the usual party vote." The arrest of the Aldermen of I'.iddedford, Maine, on alleged pre tense of fraudulent use of the polling lists, looks as if Tom Reed was get ting in some of his bull-dozing work. Martin Iron, who was a very hot iron during the disturbances on the Could lines four years ago, has cooled down, and is now selling pea nuts in St. Louis. Great- men, like water, find their level. sardine trust has been organized in France. Rut wh e we have tne r ranee coast of Maine to stand by us and a good supply of imitation French cans and labels, we can snap our fingers at the foreign sardine. Blaine and Jeremiah Rusk. Uncle Jerry is the great farmer, who emits these interesting epistles from the Agricultural De partment in Washington; and it is thought he would be a power in the rural precincts. But they might go farther and fare worse, for this would be a ticket not to be sneez ed at. . Cheese must be a very animated substance, when wp nr tnlH rw scientists that there are more, lively and vigorous animalculse in a pound of it, than there are inhabitants upon the globe. Think what wholesale slaughter a man commits when he closes his jaws on a chunk of it. We have seen cheese that was vigorous and frisky enough to walk, or hop, since the Kemmler execution by i:;f xt , 7 i. i f methods have been suggested for givinS criminals a painless exit, but no one has yet suggested letting them die of old age or killing them with kindness. The former of these is the mode preferred by the son of Erin who was condemned to death and asked how he preferred to die. It is somewhat remarkable that in the first Japanese Parliament elected, last July there were ten Christians elected, or one in thirty of the whole number, although the Christians in the country are. less than one in ten thousand of the population. This speaks well for the religious tolera- tion of the Japanese, wno, Dy tne way, are among the most progressive people in the world. Minister Phelps cables from Berlin that he will not accept the Republi can nomination for Congress in his district. Mr. Phelps may bang his hair but for all that he evidently knows when it is not a good time to let go of a dead sure thing to cross the ocean to accept a Republican nomination for Congress. The receipts the same date last year were 32 bales. Several shipments of apples have been received here recently from Mt. Airy that were in good condition and brought fair prices. Mr. John W. Bolles cleared the steamship Esfiana yesterday for Lubeck, Germany, with 2,377 barrels rosin, valued at $3,367.48. The force at work blasting rock for the streets near the National Ceme tery, unearthed several more large and curious-looking marine shells yesterday. There are mutterings in the Re publican ranks about the county nomi nations, and some of the leading colored men of the party talk of putting up an opposition ticket. A white woman named Russell was fined ten dollars in the Mayor's Court yesterday for disorderly conduct, and L- J, Bland and Lucian Bland, also disorderly, were fined the costs in their cases. John Sheehan, employed by the Street Railroad Co., is anxious to let the public know that he is not the Sheehan who was concerned in the seizure of the late Jos. Ramsden's property at Wrights ville. Cherokee Tribe No. 9 Improved Order of Red Men will give their ex cursion to Carolina Beach to-day. Some interesting operations are going on near the Champion Compress docks, where Capt. Edgar Williams with his new Hercules wrecking boat is engaged m removing an obstruction in the river a short distance west of the pier of the Compress. In water about eighteen feet deep at low tide an old hulk was found imbedded in the mud. A diver who went down found one edge of the hulk ex posed which he judged to be about forty feet long. With the aid of dynamite a good portion of the wreck has been torn up and brought to the surface; some fifteen or twenty pieces of planking and timber have been taken out. Some of the planking, which is of oak about two inches in thickness is in a good state of preservation, while the timbers not so well preserved appear to be maple or poplar. All the timbers are fastened with wooden pins, only two small iron bolts being found in the lot. Comparatively light charges of dyna mite are used in the work, just suffi cient to loosen the timbers not strong enough even to kill the catfish, some of which are thrown up by nearly every blast. What manner of vessel it is and how many scores perhaps hundreds of years it has been sleeping in the mud at the bottom of the Cape Fear river, who can tell? A Busy Season Ahead. There is a fine prospect for a large in crease in the business of Wilmington this season. Within the last year there have been built three new and impor tant railroads to Wilmington or to con nect with her railroad system the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley, the Wilming ton, Onslow & East Carolina, and the G. C. & N. . railroad from the town of Monroe on the Carolina Central into one of the most important and produc tive sections of South Carolina. These railroads have already added largely to the business of Wilmington, but the number of buyers and the amount of trade which they will contribute to her markets will be many times larger when the crops are harvested. The Star has many readers throughout this new terri tory, as well as in other portions of North and South Carolina, and merchants and others who have goods to sell will find its advertising columns the best and surest way to make the advantages and inducements they can offer known to the people who have money to spend and wish to lay it out to the best ad vantage. Union Meeting (Baptist.) The meeting of the southern section of the Eastern Baptist Association will begin to-day at Masonboro, and con tinue through Sunday. Revs. F. W. Wooten, Rogers, Ballard, Peele and Pritchard are expected to be present With perhaps other ministers. N. G., FRIDAY, AUGUST 29v 1890. WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH. A Pleasant Entertainment at the Club 1 House. , , There was a large attendance of ladies and gentlemen at the Carolina Yacht Club House on Wrightsville beach last night, the occasion being an old fash ioned Banks party, given by the mem bers of the Club, under the management of Mn Norwood Giles and Mr. McRee Cowan. There was danciner until a late hour, the festivities beginningat 8 o'clock in the evening and continuing un til midnight. Refreshments were served in great abundance and variety. Over a hundred persons were on the beach, and the evening was spent most delight fully by all. Many of the ladies and gentlemen came over in their private yachts from Wrightsville. Prof. Miller's band furnished the music for the occa sion. ' It is the universal wish and desire of those who were fortunate enough to be there, that another "old-fashioned banks party" will be given shortly.
