A Washington letter to the Phila delphia Times says Mr. Harrison is now considering the best method which he can adopt to announce to the people that he is not a candidate for renomination. This is entirely unnecessary. The people had all the information they cared for on that subject on the 5th inst. when the election returns were announced. A political obituary over Mr. Harri son's signature will be altogether superfluous. Dr. Koch, the famous discoverer of the consumption cure, is the third of thirteen children, the first nine of whom were boys. He has a brother living in St. Louis who says that the Dr. even when a boy was of an investigating Cum of mind, and in stead of playing with the other little chaps was always piruting around among the plants, flowers and things with microscope in hand, trying to find out what was in 'em. A Western Republican contempo rary emerges from the wreck to ex claim! "Talk as they will, the Re publican party will stand squarely upon the principles of protection to American industries." Pshaw! The Republican party hasn't got legs enough under it to stand squarely on anything. It can't stand at all. It's flattened out, mashed, a picturesque ruin, or words to that effect. The Atlanta papers tell of a Swe dish chemist who died in that town, whose body was embalmed and sent to Sweden where his wife resided. The good lady was very much shocked on looking on the remains to find the face as hard as marble. That's the kind of a cheek those Re publicans have who don't see a pop ular rebuke in the late election. J. C. Mullson, candidate for the Assembly in a New York district, ran his canvass cheap. All it cost him was the two-cent stamp on his "letter of acceptance. He might have reduced his expenses one-half, if he had sent in his acceptance on a pos tal card. The paragraph which con veys this information fails to state whether this paragon economist was elected. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. W. H. Strauss A hat swap. Star Office Babbitt metal. Munson & Co. "Little Lord Fauntleroy," which is listed for production at the Opera House next Saturday afternoon and night, is a play that reaches the heart. It is a beautiful ideal, seldom realized in actual experience, but none the less real be cause it is rare. Owing to the expen siveness of the attraction, the prices for the matinee will be seventy-five cents for adults and fifty cents for children, to all of the theatre. Reserved seats for Saturday night's performance at the usual prices are now on sale at Yates'. Fire at the Creosote Works. An alarm of fire came at noon yes terday from box No. 52, at the Carolina Oil and Creosote works, in the southern part of the city. The fire was on the wharf among a lot of cross-ties, and is said to have been caused by a spark from a steamboat. The Fire Depart ment was promptly on the ground, and with the assistance of the steam tug Marie soon had the fire under control. The loss will not exceed $200. Weather Forecasts. The following are the weather fore casts for to-day: For Virginia, fair and slowly rising temperature till Saturday night, winds becoming southwesterly. For North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, fair till Saturday night, slightly warmer, except stationary tem perature on coast, westerly winds. WILMINGTON, LOCAL DOTS. One Case Tried Yesterday Prisoners Sen tenced. A jury was summoned yesterday to try the case of John Williams, colored, charged with the larceny, of a pair of oars. Williams was found guilty, but the jury recommended mercy and the Court suspended judgment on payment of costs. Charles Robinson and Robert Jones, the colored boys convicted of burglary in the second degree, were sentenced to the State penitentiary Jones for ten years, and Robinson five years. These are the boys who' robbed several resi dences last summer during the absence of the owners from the city. A case against Stephen Wilson, for un lawful fence and killing stock, was con tinued to the January term. Alex. Small, colored, larceny of money from Mrs. Westerman; two years in State penitentiary. David Jones, affray; two months in the work house. The business of the term was finished yesterday with the exception of a few cost cases, which were left open until to morrow. Truck Farming that Pays. Fall and winter truck farming is im mensely profitable, if one may judge from reports received from the tide water section of Virginia, where it has been industriously followed for years. The truck growers around Wilmington mieht well make a note of it. The Progress of Suffolk, Va., referring to the matter, says: "Mr. John L. Bab- cock, one of our "Bay shore" truckers, shipped green peas to New York this week at $2.50 per basket bushel. His shipment was 75 baskets. He has a large quantity coming on to send yet. Last vear he made his last shipment tor the season on the 7th of December, for which he received $4 per basket bushel." The same paper says: "Nearly all of the truckers raise two crops on the same land a year, many of them three and some of them four. In the winter they raise leal, soinnach. celery, cabbage, &c, in the spring and summer various kinds of eeetables, and now in the faU they are raising green peas and other tender veg etables for shipment to the Northern markets." Senator Vance. The County Democratic n,xecuuvc Committee have received a letter from which he states that unakv - -- the pressure of business upon him now is so great that ne cannot pu&siuiy v-um to Wilmingion to deliver an address, as requested. He congratulates me de mocracy of New Hanover upon their victory in the recent election. Cotton Belt Bulletin.
