Mr. Dingley, of Maine, says the people have sat down so heavily up on the ship subsidy bills that there isn't a ghost of a chance to get them through this Congress. Kate Field takes the side of Par nell against the field, and maintains that because he was instrumental in bringing about a divorce suit is no reason why he should be retired. A Hungarian author has written a five act drama on Dr. Koch's con sumption cure, in which Hie hero i6 cured and comes out- all right, but the bacillus, the little villain, js kill ed. Postmaster General Wanamaker, the great civil service reformer, owns up to having dropped 20,722 Demo cratic heads into the basket, and don't feel sorry over this great slaughter, either. Experiments have been made with I-)r. Koch's lymph on three consump tive patients at New Haven with satisfactory results. The experi ments have been in oroerress several days and the patients all show marked signs of improvement. 1HE VOL. XLVH.-NO. 67. i.ney havesojne capital financiers in Washington among the Republi canstatesmen, but the trouble is they don't seem to be able to get to gether. Mr. Harrison figures on the public expenditures for 1892 at 357, 000,000, Secretary Windom at $407, 000,000, and the clerks of the Ap planation Committees for the House and Senate at 481,000,000. As there is only a margin of from $50,000,000 to $124,000,000 in these estimates it don't amount to much. That Missouri soldier who went through the Mexican war, the Mor mon war, three Indian wars nd the late unpleasantness, in which he was in forty fights and came out of all these rackets without a wound, would consider himself in bad luck if he hadn't been on the Confederate side in the last. The man who went through forty fights and couldn't come in for a pension would be a suitable subject for sympathy. Murat Halsted, formerly of Cin cinnati, now of Brooklyn, proves conclusively to his own satisfaction that Cleveland can never be again nominated for the Presidency. We would like to know when Murat got into the confidence of the Demo cratic party, and what he knows about it anyhow. Tascoit, the Chicago murderer, has been found another time; this time in Colorado. The last time he was found in China. If the fellows who have been finding Tascott so often were put to work - and were well paid for it they might find a Moses for the Republican party. Notwithstanding the fact that the Force bill contains provisions which Mr. Hoar says were left in it by mis take he had the cheek to ask the Senate to fix Friday as the day to take5 a vote upon it with these provi sions in it. That's about as cool as the late blizzard. Ve have ex-Cong.essman Town send for authority that Senator John Sherman is not nursing any Presi- dential aspirations at present, and will not be in the ring for the Re- Hp will not to hunt for the North pole go out either. A Western Republican paper says the "Republicans are lying upon their oars." This is probably a misprint for ears. The Republicans have lied so much that they could lie on almost anything. An Accident that Happened to William Walker, Colored, Yesterday After noon. William Walker, colored, who has been sick with consumption for a long time and confined to his house, corner of Eighth and Nixon streets, was found yesterday evening about five o'clock, lying upon the floor of the room he oc cupied, dreadfully burned, and the room on fire. Walker s clothing was also in flames, and but for the timely arrival of one of the neighbors who was attracted by his cries, the unfortunate man would probably have been burned to death and the house consumed by fire. As it was. Walker is burned Irom the crown of his head to the soles of his feet. The neighbors extinguished the fire in the house and called Dr. S. P. Wright to attend the injured man. It is not known how the fire origina ted, but it is supposed that Walker's clothing caught on fire while he was seated in a chair at the fire-place. It is feared that his injuries will be fatal. OPERA HOUSE. Pearl of Savoy by the New York Theatre Company. The "Pearl of Savoy" was presented to a good house last night. This charm ing tale of woman's love has many pass ages of vigor, which were given with force by Miss Helen Minkley as Marie. Certain natural graces ot manner are essential to a correct interpretation of this character, one of the most foveable with which we are acquainted. The sweet peasant girl of famed Savoy, as pure as the streams that leap from its crags, as beautiful as the landscape of her mountain house, that charms us with her innocency and truth, seldom finds a better or more capable represen tative. Miss Minkley has the personal charms as well as the 'histrionic talent to make a most acceptable Marie, and that she did so, the cordial reception accorded her by her auditors is evi dence of. To-night that sterling drama "A Man and Master" will be presented. "First Blood" at the New PostoflB.ee. The first letter deposited in the new postoffice was placed there yesterday by a boy from the Star office. He was sent to mail the missive, which was an important one, and being somewhat un- used to city ways went into the new building. Seeing a slit in the wall, marked "Letters," he dropped the letter therein, and thinking he had "per formed the proper caper" loft the place. Soon after ke discovered that he had made a blunder, and hasten ing bick, with the aid of a long stick and by dint of hard work he recovered the letter from the floor upon which it had fallen, in time to deliver it at the proper place and send it speeding to its destination in one of Uncle Sam's mail Dags.
