But little business was transacted in the Senate yesterday; Mr. Morgan made a strong speech against the effort to suppress debate on the Election bill. and was folio wen by Mr. McPherson, in continuation of his speech on Tuesday against ttie bill; the House was not in session. The President sent to the Senate without his approval the bill for the erection of ? public building at Bar Harbor. Maine. The English and Irish press comment variously on the defeat of the Parnellites in the recent election in North Kilkenny. Ireland. A boiler explosion at Cleveland, Ohio, yesterday, killed one man and fa tally wounded two others, and another man is missing, who is supposed to have been blown into Lake Erie. The President has issued his proclamation announcing that the legal formalities jiave been complied with in regard to ihe Chicago Exposition, and extending ,an invitation to foreign countries to par- iicipate therein. A warehouse and distillery, near Cartner's station, Tenn., ere burned Tuesday night; seven hun dred and fifty barrels of whiskey were destroyed, upon which the government would have secured a revenue tax of $2S.0OO. Tin-plate has been made in St. Louis from cheap Southern ores mined in the vicinity ot Chattanooga. -Early yesterday morning burglars entered a mill in Peoria; blew open the sate and secured a large amount of gioney. Kinch Freeman, a notori- i0iu negro, who committed two murders in Bertie county, "N. C, in October last, ,was bulged by masked men at Winton yesterday- Walker Martin, an eighteen year old operator at -Atlanta, as instantly killed yesterday by his friend. Willie Smith; it was a case of 'didn't know it was loaded." The Chicago postoffice was flooded yester day by the breaking of the water-pipes and thousands of Christmas presents, many or them costly, were ruined. -- Gen. Spioaer, who is in Jacksonville. Fla., is thought to be in a dying condi tion A negro was instantly killed in Memphis yesterday from contact with an electric wire. The city of In dianapolis is flooded with counter feit silver certificates of the issue of 1888. Senator Cullom, of Illinois, who looks very nuch like Abraham Lin coln, is, as Lincoln was, a native of Kentucky. U is said that Parnell read law but ntrver practiced much. His most distinguished attempt at the bar was with the crowbar. Mr. Hoar says he is a poor man. If he is too poor to have turkey to day we hope he will have codfish balls, and that he will enjoy them. The Pension office reports speak of "original widows" from which it may be inferred that there are also widows by proxy drawing pensions. John W. Young, Brigham's son, has closed a deal for 3,000,000 acres of land in Mexico, which he pro poses to colonize with Mormons from Utah. An English railroad company has adopted the American vestibule car. But they have not progressed so far yet as to adopt the American bag gage smasher. Hypnotism is one of the pleas now "being sometimes put in as a defence in murder trials. In a case like this the murderer ought to be hypnoti cally hanged. It is said that it cost Parnell $3,000 a year to pay millinery bills, etc., for Mrs. O'Shea, and at this time his mother in New Jersey was in distress and had to depend upon benevolent friends for relief. Senator-elect Irby, of South Caro lina, says while be is an Alliance man, he is also a Democrat, and hile as a Senator he will help the farmer all he can, he will do it through the National Democratic Party. The family of the late August Bel mont, afraid of body-snatchers, have had a guard placed over his grave People who are cremated don't have any apprehensions of this kind for they can be bottled and put up on ha mantel-piece. r TTrT -rw'-m- -- . - - TVJ.L,. AL,V11.1NU. 80. It is said by some that it was flour which was thrown at Parnell instead of lime, and by others mud. There is a good deal of mud-throwing in our political campaigns, but the mud-throwers on this side don't take the trouble to put in in bags. They just throw it loose and plaster It all over a fellow till he looks like an animated pug mill. Sitting Bull was a hard old custo mer to deal with. Killing , him, it seems, did not put a quietus on him, for the Indians say his ghost appears to them and urges them to war on the pale face and avenge his death. If that ghost ever gets his clamps on Short Bull, who slugged and scalped him in the flesh, he'll make short work of him. . The Star sends greeting of merry Christmas to its numerous readers and all the rest of mankind. This is the day on which the worJd be comes nearer akin than any other day in the year. It would be well for the world that ihere were more such days, but m that event we should wish fr fewer tin horns. Joe Cannon, of -thexiirty mouth, says "we are rapidly approaching that point when we will have to be careful about incurring unnecessary obligations." We should think from the gentle hints they got about the 4th of last month they would con clude that the time had already ap proached. Senator Farwell refers to the present occupant of the White House as "Little Benny." and says "he is too small mentally and every other way to fill the Presidential chair," which means that when Mr. Harri son is bent at right angles he is small at each end. Some of the South Carolina pa pers which were saddened at the de feat of Wade Hampton, are solacing themselves with the reflection that Senator elect Irby Is one of the handsomest men in that dignified roost. - The Albany Argus is publishing articles to show who discovered America. If they keep this thing up we will conclude after awhile that America discovered itself. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. R. W. Hicks Rice straw. Notice to railroad contractors. Notice to Telephone subscribers. Bryant (colored), on Red Cross between Seventh and Eighth streets, was entered and robbed some time before daybreak yesterday morning. The following is the range of the ther mometer yesterday at the Signal umce in this city, as compared with the same date last year 1890 1889 12 o'clock noon.. J J J J 0 LJm M 4 f& sflfta 82 64 WILMINGTON, LOCAL DOTS. Items of Interest Gathered Here and There uid Briefly Noted; had several "booms" last night. Mr. F. L. Meares, of Radford, Va., is here on"a Christmas visit. The public schools of the city will reopen for "business" on Monday, January 5th. J. S. was doing his level best last night to help the pyrotechnic pla toon Hooper. On the Front, last night, was almost as bad as being "at the front" some years ago. Mr. Guy Cardwell, one of the A. C. L. employes, left for Richmond, Va., last night, to spend the Christmas holidays. The demand for "horns" was "active and strong" last night; but the market was finally "glutted" and there was then a rapid "downward tendency." Melvin Durant, colored, a train hand on the Wilmington Seacoast Rail road, got his hand badly mashed yester day while coupling up a train on the road. Dressed turkeys and chickens were abundant in the markets yester day. aHd sold readily, the price for tur keys ranging from 16 to 18 cents per pound. The district messenger boys of the Postal Telegraph Company have issued a very neat and pretty "Christmas and New Year's Greeting" to their rt patrons. Mr. John R. Latta, Assistant Auditor of the Atlantic Coast Line, was notified yesterday of his appointment by the Governor as Notary Public, and duly qualified. The employes of the Southern Express Company were as busy as they could be yesterday. An immense num ber of packages were received and sent out from the office. About twenty policemen, with Chief Hal at their head, were out on dress parade last evening. They at tracted much attention as, with soldier ly bearing, they marched up Front street. The house destroyed by fire Tuesday evening last, on South Sixth street, was the property oi Messrs. Adrian & Vollers. It was insured for $2,500 in the Phoenix, of Hartford, with Messrs. Hodges & Taylor. The grass on the vacant lot on North Fourth street, opposite the Cape Fear Academy, was set on fire yesterday by fire-crackers. Capt. B. R. Russell, from the Atlantic Engine house, saw the blaze and put out the fire before the fencing, which was in great danger, caught. A very beautifui piece of work is the winter scene sent out by The Ty son & Jones Carriage Co., of Carthage, N. C. It is difficult for a novice to de scribe it. but it is a gem, and retlects great credit on the enterprising firm who seem to appreciate the benefits ol advertising. A subscriber asks how the Star got left" on the speech of Grover Cleve land delivered at a meeting ot the Ke- form Club of New York Tuesday night. Bless your soul, honey, we received that speech by mail several days ago, for pub lication yesterday, but could not make room for it without trespassing too much on our regular departments. Christmas "With the Lutherans. In the English services at 11 a. m. to day in the Lutheran Church, Rev. F. W. E. Peschau, the pastor, will preach a Christmas sermon, and the music will be of a high churchly order. Chronicle and Sentinel says : "It is reasonably certain that the Atlantic Coast Line will be ex tended into the city of Augusta before the end of the new year. Everything is now in readiness for the commence ment of active operations. The necessary charters for the extension of the road from Florence through Sumter, Orange burg, Barnwell and Aiken into the city of Augusta, have been secured from the Legislatures of South Carolina and Georgia. The extension recommended by the officials of the road was formally endorsed at the last annual meeting by the stockholders. This is one of the most hopeful ' enterprises for the future of Augusta. It seems for us one of the strongest and most prosperous railroad systems in the South. The building of this road will make possible future developments of great moment to the commercial interests of Augusta. SCHOONER A. P. NOWELL. Libelled for Services Bendered in Saving the Vessel From Fire. The schooner A. P. Nowell was libelled yesterday for services rendered by Chas. W. Kunold. on? of the police officers of the city, in saving the vessel on the occasion of the fire on the river front at Messrs. Fowler & Morrison and Robinson & King's wharves, a short time ago. The vessel was lying at fowler & Morrison's wharf and was in great danger, when officer Kunold, it is alleged, boarded her and aroused the crew and assisted in remov ing her to a place of safety. His over coat and hat were burned while board ing the vessel, and the day following the fire Kunold made application to the master of the Nowell to be reimbursed for the damage incurred; but this was refused. Proceedings were then in stituted before Judge Seymour of the U. S. District Court, and yester day, monition having been issued, attachment of the vessel was made by Deputy U. S. Marshal Elder. The libellant through his counsel. Mr. Iredell Meares, asks for an award of salvage to be fixed by the court. It is probable the vessel will give bond to answer the libel and proceed on her voyage. Meantime she remains in the hands of the Marshal. BY RIVER AND RAIL. Receipts of Naval Stores and Cotton Yesterday. Wilmington, Columbia .& Augusta R.
