A Georgia editor says he may not have as many silver dollars as some men but he has as much good, solid fan in discussing free coinage as any one. Of course the Legislature in elect ing Railroad Commissioners will have due regard to such an import ant raflrpad and commercial center as Wilmington. The Republicans of the Illinois Legislature are still coquetting with the three F. M. B. A. representatives. The 101 Democrats are still solid for Palmer. When Virginia gets cut worms in m her snow falls, Utah salt, and other sections little black bugs, there must be something wrong up in the snqw shop. The Durham Sun came out in a new suit Thursday, and a very neat and becoming one it is. The Sun is a good and newsy local paper, and well worthy of the . support it re ceives. President Barrillas, of Guatemala, is thrifty. While one company is asking thii government for a $3,000,000 subsidy to lay an ocean cable between San Francisco and the Kingdom of Ha waii, another company proposes to do the work without a dollar of sub sidy if the government will grant a charter. But this company will nof have as much stock to give away to the statesmen as the other one. i r II 1 TT Tt n IV - I 1 . VOL. XLVII.---NO. 136. We are indebted to Mr. N. B. Broughton, President, for" a very handsome catalogue of the Raleigh Business College, an institution res cently established in that city. An institution of this kind has been much needed in this State, where our young men can get a good busi ness education without going to Northern colleges, as so many of them have been doing. Dogs are rated at fancy prices sometimes. At the New York Bench show there is one valued at $4(?,000, another at $25,000, another at $20, 000, and several at from $15,000 to $10,000. There does not seem to be a rush, however, to buy them. Dogs do not range so high in North Carolina, but one dog, no matter how mean he is, is worth a good many sheep. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS. We do not urge the Legislature to elect a Railroad Commissioner from Wilmington because it is in Eastern Carolina, or from its geographical posi tion, further than it is the most import ant shipping point in the State. It is the metropolis and distributing point for long lines of railroads, has the heaviest cotton and naval stores receipts, with the largest foreign trade of any city within our borders. It is the focus from which radiates more shipping, involving larger interest and consequently affecting more of our citizens than any other. One member of the Commission then we think Wil mington can justly claim. Coming in daily contact with our merchants, hear ing their views and ideas, he would be better prepared to promote our interest. If he should bring to his duties large practical experience so much more would his services be valuable to us and to the other two Commissioners. He must be broad-guaged enough not to look only to one city's interest, but that of all sections. So Jarge a'trade centre will need some one on the com mission as a representative, and we hope the Legislature will riot pass us by. X. V - I 1 ? 1VJLU LOCAL DOTS. ' ' WILMINGTON, N. C, "SUNDAY, SCHEDULE B TAX. Resolutions Adopted by Merchants of "Wilmington. A meeting of merchants of Wilming-' ton was held yesterday at the Produce Exchange-. - Mr. Win. Calder, vice president ot the Exchange, called the meeting to order, when Mr. David G. Worth was, on motion, called to the chair, and Col. Jno. L. Cantwell was requested to act as secretary. Mr. Calder stated that the meeting had been caUed at the request of a num ber of the merchants of the city to take such action as might be desired and de termined upon as tothe tax known as "Schedule B," now Before the State Assembly. Mr. Jas. C. Stevenson, chairman of the committee, appointed at a former meeting to visit Raleigh, stated that the committee had appeared before the com mittee of the Legislature having-the Tax bill in charge, and made argument ur ging the repeal of "Schedule B." Mr. Stevenson submitted the following pre amble and resolutions, which after dis cussion were unanimously adopted. Whereas, We the merchants of Wil mington, representing the various mer cantile interest of our city, have sent a committee to Raleigh on two seperate occasions during the present session of the Legislature, and laid before the Committee on Finance of the two houses, the unjust discrimination and burdensome character of the present tax known as the Merchant's License Tax; Whereas: We submitted to the com mittee as a substitute for this law, a bill looking to a direct specific tax, which had the unqualified endorsement of every member of the sub-committee ap pointed to hear us, and also of the Treasurer of the State. Whereas, The Treasurer of the State voluntarily declared that he had known for years that the present law is uncon stitutional and cannot be collected if re sisted; Whereas, The sub-committee and the treasurer agreed without division, that our substitute would raise more revenue than the presentjaw, and would be equitably divided among all of the bus iness interests of the State, so that it would not be burdensome to any; Whereas, Mr. S. S.Alexander, as chair man of the ExecutiveCommittee of the Farmers' Alliance, in an address before the Finance Committee, declared that the present law is class legislation of the worst kind, and would bear heavily upon the Alliance stores which are now quite numerous throughout the State and increasing every day, and demanded its repeal ; Whereas, There is now on deposit in a bank in one of our western towns a fund of $1500 for the purpose of con testing this law ; Whereas, As good citizens of our Commonwealth, we leel that we have exhausted all means in our power to present our grievances to the Legisla ture and have suggested an equitable remedy ; Wnereas, We are informed that the Finance Committee have recommended the enactment of the old law ; therefore be it Resolved, That we protest against the re-enactment of this section of the old bill, and do hereby signify our purpose to test its legality in the highest courts be fore paying again under its provisions. Resolved, That we recommend similar action and invite co-operation by the merchants throughout the State. Resolved, That 'a copy of these resolu tions be sent to our Senator and Repre sentatives. On motion, the committee appointed at the previous meeting was requested to continue to act in the matter, and to cause copies of the resolutions to be made and forwarded to the members of the Legislature without delay. The meeting then adjourned. OPERA HOUSE. A Spectacular Presentation of Kip Van "Winkle, Tuesday Night. The Milwaukee Journal of Dec. 16th, 1890, said of this company: The drawing powers of "Rip Van Winkle" seemed undiminished. Despite the inclemency of the weather an audi ence of large proportions witnessed the opening performance at the Standard Theatre last night. The play was care fully presented, both dramatically and with proper scenic -effects. Carner, in the character of "Rip," deserves all the praise that has been spoken of him. The changeable character was handled by him faultlessly. His support, too, was all that could be desired. Rose Berrell made a strong-minded yet loving Gretchen, and the other characters were in good hands. Reserved seats at Yates' to-morrow Library Association. An interested audience at the Library rooms yesterday afternoon looked at the fine collection of crayon drawings and paintings which were thrown upon the screen, to the size of nine feet square by the stereopticon. Each picture was de scribed by a quotation from Scripture or by an artistic criticism of its leading features. In many cases the portraits of the artists themselves followed the pre sentation of their pictures. This com pletes a series of lectures, remarkable in the annals of Wilmington for its low rates of admission compared with the large amount of entertainment and use ful information afforded to its patrons. Newborn Races. In the pony races at Newbern Friday there were four entries. The pony belonging to Mr. Thomas Lake, of Wil mington, won first money. Mr. R. P. Williams' pony won second money. p MARCH 1, 1891. A Lady Seriously Injured. Mrs. Catlett, wife of Professor Gat lett, while walking on Front street, near Princess, yesterday afternoon, was knocked down by a boy on a bicycle, and severely if not seriously injured. She was unable to rise, and was taken home in a carriage as speedily as possible, and a physician called to attend her. Last night the police were looking for the boy a white lad about fourteen years of age. He was riding what is known as a 'safety." - THE MAILS.
