Mr. Parnell says that Jtfr. Glad stone is a spider. Mr. Parnea should remember that j the spider although, like the showman's monkey, "per fectly docile, except when irritated," won't do to fool with. ' It is said that Queen Victoria's nose is taking on a beautiful carmine hue. The remarkable thing about it is that this roseate development is coincident with her marked: interest in a new Scotch distillery. Kentucky is the only section of this country where a man jean be a ' life long" Whig, afterwards a Re publican and after that a Democrat, as the late Coll Taylor, pf Louis ville, was, according to th dispatch announcing his death. i Perhaps the . speediest -and most effective way to settle" the Parnell problem in Ireland woul4 be to in duce the fascinating Mrs. jO'Shea to emigrate. Parnell would follow her, and the great disturbing element would be removed. Her apron strings are stronger than his respect for himself or h'is devotionjto Ireland. The iudsre. who had a nose, judicially declared that was only a one scent cigar which fshould not be current in Paris. VOL. XLVII. NO. 148. If the cable dispatches in refer ence to the conduct of Parnell be true in leaving his seat in the House of Commons to enjoy the company of Mrs. O'Shea at Brighton, it is not strange that his friends are becoming dissaTIsfied. In his total disregard of public opinion and of the require ments of Common decency he pre sumes too much on the forbearance of his friends. The man is either crazy or his moral sense is so blunt ed that he has lost respect for him self and regard for the friends who have stood by him thus far. If only Parnell and his friends were involved it would not be so bad, but the cause of a sadly oppressed, long suffering and hard struggling country is im perilled. Miss Josephine Medill, of Chicago, the cable dispatches inform us, will be the first daughter of America who will have the honor of kissing Queen Victoria's hand this year. . Perhaps we have no business to meddle with the kissing business of Miss Medill, but it seems to us she could put them to better use, and where they would be more relished by planting them under the moustache of some able-bodied, good-looking American sovereign. Why a level-headed, well constructed American girl from the meat-ropolis of the Great West should want to be trotting up and kissing the hand of an old woman with two or three generations of children, a violent temper and a red nose, we can't comprehend. Several cases of deaths from trichinosis are reported in a Ger man settlement in Iowa, from eat ing pork which was probably not thoroughly cooked. There is not the slightest doubt that the Richmond and West Point Termi nal would be only too glad to secure control of what is known as the Robin son system, controlling a line from Bal timore by steamship to Norfolk, and from there to Elberton, Ga., and capital ized for considerably less than its real value. It may also be said that there is no possibility of such a change as long as John M. Robinson is alive. He is the the active manager and the property is very closely held. Here is a company which holds the controlling interest in four or five other lines making up the Seaboard Air Line, which is composed of six different railroads and the Baltimore Steam racket Company, operated under one management, and yet it has a capital stock of only a little more than a million and a quarter, and the funded debt is not greater than that. Further, it has incurred no onerous ob ligations on behalf -of connecting lines. It will readily be understood, there is no reason why this dividend-paying prop erty should be sold, or why it could be purchased upon any terms that would not be favorable to the Richmond Term inal people. There is not in the coun try any important and strong railroad system which is held by the control of so small an amount ot stoctc. BY RIVER AND RAIL. Receipts of Naval Stores and Cotton Yesterday.
