Tne r"it crop promises to be very heavy in Stokes this . year, especially apples. Sometf the peaches were kill ed - by the recent cold. , Such a season for grass and clover has rarely been witnessed in this section. Both promise all that could be asked. Shelby Aurora: Wheat is look ing remarkably well ahd the promise now is that a good crop will be made While much of the fruit was killed, yet enough remains for all practical pur poses. A beautiful and commodi ous church is now being built at Palm Tree church to take the place of the old one, which is too small to hold the growing contregation. Burlington Neais : Saturday night on the railroad . above Elmira mills, Bud Harvey nd Dock Guy fell out by the way, when Bud pulled his little seven shooter, and proceeded to fill Dock with lead. Two shots took effect, one cutting a gash in his breast and the other went in from under the shoulder blade and is still in him. Bud and two of his chums lelt immediately. . New Berne Journal: A Balti more company that has several manu facturing establishments of various kinds located in the South is about to embark further in such enterprises, and Nee Berne is under favorable consideration as the place for locating a cotton gin nery, cotton seed oil mill and fertilizer factory, with a capital of 50,000, each one first-class ot its kind completely equipped with the latest lmorOved ma chinery. Roanoke Beacon: Much inter est has beeu taken this week in the trial of Mike Jones,"colored, who was charged with the murder of Mr. N. B. Atkins and mother, of Hertford county. The murder was committed last fall, and a most horrible one it was, as those know read an account cf it in the Beacon soon afterwards. It seems that the evidence given at the inquest led to the arrest of Mike Jones, and afterwards to that of. one Kinch Freeman, who it will be re membered was lynched in his cell at Winton soon after his arrest. Jones was tried by the Hertford court, -ijut a. new trial, or rather a removal to . this county was granted, arid on Monday the prisonor was brought here, and -tin-' Tuesday a jury was empanneledi'and the case heard. The evidence was-all? taken by Wednesday morning. After argument Tudge Bryan charged the jury which retired at 2 p. m. and at 4 p. m. brought in a verdict of not guilty. There was not sufficient evidence to convict and the prisoner was discharged. Lexington Dispatch : Present indications point to a fine wheat har vest. A well informed man informs the Dispatch that the condition of the crop could hardly be better than it is. Mining business is booming in Mont-, gomery county. Mr. W. K. Dickens' came up from the Morotauk mine last Saturday and reported that a ten stamp equipment is being erected and that it will be in running order in about a month. The ore is free gold, and enough has been taken out to keep the stamp mill running six months. This is one of the best known and most pro ductive mines in North Carolina. It is about 11 miles southeast of Lexington and the same distance south of Thomas ville. It has been in operation at inters vals more than a dozen years. Theftre is known as argentiferous galena, and contains gold, silver. lead and zinc. The veins are large and the ore is very rich. After a suspension of a few years on ac count of litigation, operations were re sumed last August under the manage ment of Superintendent J. A. JLeach, and were continued until the. 11th inst., when work was stopped temporarily; A great quantity of ore has been brought to the surface and there is enough on hand now to keep the smelting works busy for some time. The ore is reduced at the works at Thomasville, where the' gold, silver and lead are separated, the zinc being saved for treatment at some future time. . - Charlotte News : L The Metho- Hisr roncrrecatidin at Burlington (for merly Company shops) yesterday wit-- nessed the somewnat starmug the pastor dropping to the pufeu floor and expiring while- in the mtdstv of his sermon.
