Scotland Neck Democrat: There has been s6me doubt among the farmers iur several weeKs as to whether or not mere wouia rje a stand ot cotton. The recent rain nave Drought up the cotton rapidly and it is now thought there is a Kjou 5iana. Rockingham Rocket: The hail storm in the Mason Cross section was one that will stand as number one on the record ot heavy hail storms. Relia ble authority says that there were drifts a foot deep on the Friday evening after it fell on Tuesday night. New Berne Journal: John Cox a colored man who fled from Jones county under suspicion of having mur dered William Sutton, colored, about three years ago, was apprehended at Greenwood, Mississippi, where he was living under an assumed name, brought back and lodged in Trenton jail on the 21st inst. Raleigh News and Observer: A white man was found dead yesterday morning at Princeton near the railroad track close to the water tank with his head crushed and otherwise mangled. The indications were that he Jiad been knocked from a passing tram by the tank and after falling had been mangled by the train. Rocky Mount Argonaut: It is an old saying, that "there is nothing new under the sun," but there are excep tions to every rule, and we do not think the history of the world records a case where an owl was bitten by a mad dog, and was afterwards killed lor fear ot his having been inoculated with hydropho bia, which happened here last week. Charlotte News: The neigh borhood near the corner of Fourth and Poplar streets were somewhat sur prised this morning to find in the mud and slush a small infant. Chief of Po lice Mason was notified of the find, and he in company with Dr. Register walk ed down and viewed the little body. A crowd had gathered around and all were of the opinion that it was a white child. Who the heartless mother is in all probability will never be known. Chatham Record: A negro wo man was' found in the woods one day last week, near Rtggsbee's Store, and was carried to our county poor house. No one knows who she is, and she will not or cannot talk and seems to be ah idiot. Mrs. Betsy Snipes died in this county on last Saturday, aged about eighty years. She was the jjddow of the late Rev. William Snipes, of blesseii memory, and was truly a "mother in Israel." Wilson Advance: Mr. E. R. Gay killed a snake on Nash street, just in front of Rev. H. W. Battle's residence, Monday night. It was a moccasin, four feet six inches in length. Wade Davis is the champion Wilson county farmer to date. He brought to our office yesterday a tobacco leaf 7x12 inches and said he had five acres just like it. John Moore, an insane negro, was put in jail yesterday for saf e-keeping.ApplicaJ tion for his entrance has been made to the Goldsboro Asylum. He told Sheriff Crowell he was accustomed to four meals every day, and he expected chick ens and eggs to be the article of each meal. Monroe Enquirer-Register: On Monday, May 25th, during a rain storm, lightning struck Susan Featherstone. a negro woman living on Mr. D. C Ross' place, killing her instantly. She was in a field hoeing, using a steel hoe. There was an unusully heavy fall of rain on Goose Creek one night about two weeks ago. The next morning after the rain the people living near the creek gathered up fish on the banks of the creek by the bushel. The rain filled the creek rapidly, overflowing the banks, and the fish went out into the fresh water, and when the creek fell it left them stranded on the banks. The peo ple in the neighborhood bad fish to eat for a week. Concord standard: Monday even ing at Sechler's saw mill, one mile from China Grove, Frank Sherrill, son of the widowed B. C. Sherrill, met with a hor rible and fearful accident that resulted in death. He was just seventeen years of age, and was industriously running a saw mill, doing all the work himself. He shouldered a slab and started to walk off, when one end caught in the running circular saw. It jerked him back and upon the saw, amputating his left arm, and threw him up. He came down face forward and the saw ripped one side to the hollow and threw him to the roof, and this time he fell a little to one side, but his right leg was caught and sawed off. This occurred about 4 o'clock in the evening, and the young man lived to 8 o'clock Tuesday morn ing. . Wadesboro Messenger-Intelltgen- cer: Conservative estimates place the number of bales of cotton in the hands of the farmers of Anson, and still un sold, at from l,500,to 2,000. Mr. Henry T. Drake, of Wadesboro, has just received from Washington letters patent on a barrel making machine which is expected to revolutionize the barrel'making business. The Wades boro brownstone quarry will be sold, un der a deed of trust, on the 24th day of Tune. The sale of this quarry will not interfere with its development, but will probably clear the way for increased ac tivity in pushing the woik there. - News reached here yesterday of the death, on Tuesday last, of Miss Sarah McRae, eldest daughter of Dr. J. A. McRae. of White's Store cownship. Miss McRae was about 19 years old, and the events leading up to her death were peculiarly sad. About a month ago she stuck a nail in her foot, and, though she suffered considerably at the time, the injury was not thought to be serious but about two weeks ago blood poison set in and she steadily grew worse until death relieved her of her suffering. nncKien's Arnica saive.
