OUTLINES.
A colored men's convention is in
session at Houston, Texaf. Six
masked men robbed the mail and ex
press cars on the Southern Pacific rail
road at a small station m Texas; several
sacks of man and all tne money and
valuables in the express car were taken.
The British Foreign Office does
not apprehend a serious dispute over
the Sultan of Turkey permitting the
Russian ship Moscowa to pass the. Dar
danelles. Emperor William and
Chancellor Von Caprivi have left Ber

The Queen of the Hawaiian Islands
is unpopular with natives-and Ameri
cans, and the Reeling fbr a republic is
spreading. An injunction has been
issued in England against payment of a
draft for 75,000 to Balmaceda's finan
cial agent. Crops in Scotland are
half ruined by recent storms. - The
government at "Washington has received
official advices from Minister Egan of
the downfall of;Balmaceda's government
in Chili. A car loaded with gun-
powder on a railroad train in Arizona
exploded, killing two men and destroy
ing several cars. - Cotton manufac-

Storms," in which theories were ad
vanced and experiments narrated
practically the same as those ad
vanced and made by the rain-makers
of to-day. i

It seems that the coroner's jury
have found that the primary cause
of the recent horrible railroad acci
dent at Bastian's Bridge, near States
ville, was the loosening of a rail by
unknown wreckers, but it also found
sufficient fault with the railroad com
pany to furnish ground for lawsuits
enough to keep the railroad's attor
neys busy for some time to come. If
there had been a j guard at that
bridge this rail could not have been
removed, and it the train had been
slowed up, as it should have been,
this fearful slaughter of-men' and
women would not have happened.
There are some bold larcenies per

boldest reported recently occurred in

The Vestry of St. James

There was an advance in the
local cotton market yesterday; prices
being quoted at 1 cents per pound for

Apples from Mt. Airy are being
shipped to Wilmington, but on account
of careless packing do not command
the best prices.
Receipts of catton yesterday

The rice planters on the Cape Fear
river expect ;.to commence cutting as
soon as the water is off the fields. The
crop, it is thought, has not been materi
ally injured by the late heavy rains and
freshets. ,
Over in South Carolina the prospects
are not encouraging. Heavy rains com
menced about ten days ago and have
been almost continuous ever since, pro
ducing the highest freshets known
in years in the Edisto,' Ashepoo.
Combahee and Coosawhatchie rivers.
All the upper plantations on these
rivers are submerged, and will, sustain
heavy loss both in the quantity and
quality of the rice produced. All of
the young rice overflowed will be de
stroyed, and all the older rice which is
ready to cut and is overflowed will sprout
and be a total loss unless the water re
cedes at once. The only thing that has
saved the lower plantations has been
the westerly winds, which have driven
off the tides and taken off a great deal
of the freshet water. If ihe winds had
been easterly and the tides been driven
in, the loss would have been very great.
In Georgia, the crop promises to be
one of unusual fine quality. The grain
has not been injured perceptibly by the
rain, and if the weather continues fair a
good deal of the crop will soon be har

We select from six different makers comprising all

We give especial attention to the selection of Orand
