ARTIFICIAL IVORY. No More Need for Elephant's Tusks. A patent has been recently taken out for a process for manufacturing an artificial ivory out of the same materials which enter into the struc ture of the natural ivory. By this process , quicklime is : first treated with sufficient water to convert:-it into the hydrate, 'tint before it has become completely hvdrated or "slaked" an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid is poured on to it; -and while stirring tne mixture the calcium carbonate,' mag nesia and alumina are incorporated in small quantities at a timeand last-. ly the gelatine and albumen, melted in water, are added. The point to aim at is : to obtain, .a compost suffi ciently plastic and as intimately mixed ' as oossible. It is then set aside to allow the phosphoric acid to complete its action upon the chalk.
