SUGAR BURNED AS FUEL. The Furnaces At Up Nearly All Else lovable and the Carzo Had to Follow. - . . Philadelphia Record. The British steamship Dunedin, which sailed from Cienfuegos on October 3d for Newr York or Phila delphia, with a cargo of sugar, has been forced to put into Newport for fuel, having been -compelled to burn part of her cargo, to enable her to "reach a i coaling station. The heavy gales, which detained the ves sel several days beyond her usual passage time, consumed all of the surplus fuel which is generally taken on board beyond the usual allowance. Captain McKechie found that by doing his best fuel would be gone m two days before his vessel would reach Newport News, the nearest port, and he gave orders to burn everv available thing on deck to make steam. Ten barrels of crude petroleum were thrown in the fur naces, and on top of this was thrown deck fittings, cabin doors and all loose stuff below decks, but even then land was not in sight, so far as the eye could reach, and the storm was still blowing with great fury. Captain McKechie then gave or ders to begin on the cargo and bag after bag of sugar was thrown on the furnaces, until sixty tons of the raw sugar was used in the furnaces. Sugar, to the surprise of all, burned as well as the coal and gave out equally as much heat.
