Raleigh Visitor: The Baptist
Tabernacle is nearing completion, and
will be one of the finest and prettiest
religious edifices in the South. It is
said that the alterations will cost about
$8,000. i:'.:;f:-, -
Raleigh Chronicle: A verv dis

the narrow-guage railroad now in course
of construction, got into a difficulty and
the son of Mr. Bowen was dangerously
if not fatally cut.. '

'Raleigh News and - Observer
The cub bear who so ferociously at
tacked Mr. Beckwith at the Exposition
a few days since has at last come to
grief. Yesterday he tried the same
game on a colored citizen from near
Penny s,Mill, who fortunately was pro
vided with a stout cudgel, with which he
soon laid Bruin a corps at his owner's
door.
Newbern Journal: Mr. Wiliam
Ellis has the shells fiom one mammoth

off. The shell which lost the least will
weigh near six ounds. They were
picked up in a bed of shell rock in Jones
county, eighteen miles from the city.
They are the largest ever seen here, and
will be on exhibition at the next New

Winston Sentiuel: The North
Carolina Midland Road, between Winston-Salem,

Wadesboro Messenger Intelli
gencer: Work has commenced on the
new union passenger depot at this place.
The depot-will be a beauty, and is to be
pushed to a rapid completion.
The four-year old son of Mr. Thomas'
Poplin, who lives on Dr. W. H. Battle's
farm, at Lilesville, met a terrible death
last Saturday. The little fellow was
playing in the upper story of the gin
house an old-fashioned horse-power
gin and fell through the belt hole,
lodging on the big cog wheel. The gin
was in motion at the time, and the boy
was carried round and caught by the
trundle "wheel, the cogs on which cut
entirely through his body, instantly
crushing out his young life. The body
was horribly mangled.
- Charlotte News: One day last
September, Mr. T. C. Youngblood, of
Huntersville, was bitten on one of his
fingers by a snake. The wound ap
parently healed, but a few days ago the
hnger began to. swell and the swelling
was extending to the hand. The doc
tor thought it necessary to amputate
Mr. Youngblood s finger to save his
life. A match in a quantity of cot
ton that was being run through the gin
of Esquire S. H. Hilton, yesterday
afternoon, ignited and caused a lively
blaze. ' Tnat the gin house itself was
saved was a wonder. A laree lot of
seed and lint cotton was burned, but
the hands succeeded in saving I the
machinery and building. i I
Rockingham Rocket : Report
says that John R. Dawkins, of Keyser.
was bitten by a mad-dog last week and

to apply to this wound the mad stone of
the late J. T. Butler. The corner
stone of Wadesboro's new Methodist
Church was laid last week. The build
ing is to be of brick trimmed with
brownstone; will have a seating capacity
ot 900, and when completed will cost
$6,000. -There are at this time five
prisoners in the county jail, all colored.
v our of these are serving out sentences
of imprisonment and one was brought
up - from Laurinburg baturdav on the
charge of theft. : The colored por-

rying skelton keys and raiding the de
pot and private residences at that place.
He was arrested but escaped. .
Rocky Mount Argonaut: Mr.
A. Daughtridge died at his home about
three miles from Rocky Mount on the

As the fast mail in charge of Capt. Horn
passed Rocky Mount at 6.35 last night
going bouth, a man silting in tnesmK-

the door. He was lollowed by the. con

mer calling upon him to stop, but be
fore they reached him he lumped lrom
the platform of the car and struck the
rail on the side track with his head.crusn

which was put off at the station, letters
were found which showed him to be w,

Hear Me!
J HAVE FITTED UP MY SHOP IN FIRST-
Class Style and I expect to do nothing but first-class
work. I have given the 10 cents shaving a fair trial
and find that it will not work, and I have advanced to
my old price 15 cents a shave, eight for $1.00.
Respectfully, " A. PREMPERT.
