two tramps came to that portion of the
traia where Flagman Biackwell was sta
tioned and were endeavoring to get
back under tbe train, and when stopped
one picked up something from the
ground, saying. "There's wbo
put us off." whereupn Flagman Black
well replied that it wat not he but tbe
conductor. Tbe other tramp then tpoke
op and taid, -I'll fix the and
pulled bit pistol and fired, hitting Mr.
Blackwell. tbe ball entering hit bowels,
killing him in a very few minutet.

and Mr. Blackweli't reply wat hit last
wordt on earth. "I am abot." Tbe train
waa harried to the next station, where a
doctor was secured, but too late to ren

victim died between ten and fifteen min
utet after being thot.
During the excitement which occur

murderer took to tbe woods. The tramp
wat very grimy and dirty, making recog
nition quite difficult, but be it believed
to be a man by tbe name of Gill, wbo bat
cauted tbe conductort on tbe Southern
Railway between Durham and Raleigh
much trouble, and wbo is taid to have
been very Intuiting to teveral ladiet tn
Johnston county.
A special train with a posse of deter
mined men and teveral bloodhounds
wat sent from Florence and reached the
scene of the crime about six hourt after
tbe dattardly deed wat committed, and
are scouring the country in search ol tbe
murderer.

Mr. Blackwell wat about 27 years of
age. uomarried and highly esteemed by
hit employer! and all with whom be
came in contact. He had recently, from
hit tavings, purchased a farm at For
eston. S. C, and placed his father upon
it. Tbe A. C. L. authorities have offered
a reward of $250 for the capture of tbe
murderer.
It is reported the bloodhounds and
posse tracked the murderer to the Cape
Fear river near Fayetteville, wbere, it is
thought, he crossed the river, and it
to be hoped tbat be will be caught, and
juttice will toon .be meted to him in the
manoer bedeterves.

Sunday morning about 3.30 o'clock an
alarm of fire was tent in from box 45,
Nortbrop't mill, on account of a one-
ttory frame building on Front ttreet, be
tween Church and Castle, being on fire.
The flames toon communicated to Mr.
P. T. Dicktey's residence, near by,
rhich it occupied by him and bis
family, and alto to a amall wooden
ttore occupied by Frank McRae, col
ored. Mr. Dicktey'a dwelling was con
siderably damaged, while tbe other two
buildings, the former of which wat
owned by Mrt. Frank Darby and the lat
ter by Mr. Fred B. Rice, were about de
ttroyed by the flames. The building
rhere the fire originated, and- which it
thought to be of incendiary origin, wat
occupied at a grocery ttore by a colored
stock company.
Explanatory.
In tbe Star of Sunday appeared an
account ol tbe narrow escape Irom
drowning of a lady and three gentle
men at Wrighttville Beach. Mr. E. J.
Wood, one of the imperilled party, ur
gently requested that the namea be
omitted, and stated tbat Mr. B. F.
Hall also wished tbe newspaperi to pur
sue this course. The otar complied
with tbe request, but as tbe names have
appeared in other papers, we now state
tbat tbe parties were Miss Sue Hall and
Mr. John Hall, daughter and son respec
tively of Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Hall, Mr. E.
J. Wood, son of the late Dr. Thomas F.
Wood, and nephew of Mrs. B. F. Hall,
aod Mr. John D. Spruat. brother of
Mrs. B. F. Hall.

Sheriff McClemmon, of Flbrence,
S. C, arrived in the city yesterday from
Newbern in charge of George Rich
mond, colored, wanted in Florence for
the murder of another colored man.
The sheriff and hit prisoner arrived on
the 12 40 o'clock afternoon train on tbe
Wilmington & Newbera railroad and
departed for Florence on the 4 o'clock
W., A. & A. railroad train.
Richmond, the accused, is about 28
years of age, and is a native of this
city. The crime of which he stands
charged was committed on the 14th of
last month and Richmond made his
escape and evaded arrest until captured
several days ago. Richmond is a painter
by trade.
Painfully Burt.
Mr. Joseph Schroder, engineer for the
Hilton Lumber Company, suffered a
painful accident yesterday morning
about 0 o'clock. He was oiling some
bearings about the machinery of the saw
mill when his right arm was caught in a
rapidly moving belt and wat badlv
crashed before he coaltL extricate it.
He was taken at once to bis borne on
Third between Davit and Harnett streets,
and Dr. J.T. Scbonwald called by tele
phone.
Mr. Schroder's injuries were found to
consist of two fractures, one of the arm
and one of the forearm.

Company a temporary injunction, re-

sion are cited to appear at Wilmington,
N. C, September 6th, and show cauie
why the injunction should not be made
permanent. The restraining order wat
served on the commission this morning
while that body was in session. S. Otho
Wilson was delegated to appear at Wil
mington at repretentative of the com
mission. The Postal Telegraph Company filed
exceptions to tbe rate reducing the ten
word message from 25 to 20 cents. Ex
ceptions were overruled. Tbe Postal
baa not decided whether to ask for an
injunction. If not, the rate goes into
effect September 1st.
