' The palatal duty devolves upon at of announcing tba death oa yesterday at teraooa at ber lather's reaideaca In this city of Mrs Alice London Daves, wife of Majjr Graham Daves aad daughter of oar venerable townsman. Dr. A. L De- Rosset. Mrs. Davea bad a stroke of paralysis a year or two aro. bat rallied somewhat from the attack and was able to move .about with assistance, bat oa Monday last she was agaia prostrated by tbe dis ease aad gradually sank under it until death closed the scene oa yesterday. . She was a woman of exalted character aad gifted with an intellect of tbe high est order aad woald have made a name la the republic of lettere had she turned ber attention to literary pursuits. She possessed wit, bright, sparkling aad vi vacious, aad she touched ao subject which she did not adorn aad beautify. With a mind stored with the rich tress- area of aacieat aad modern writers, but without the least pedantry, she could 'tapm information aod delight to all who gathered aroand ber and listened to the. brilliancy of her rounded periods. She was indeed a most fascinating woman and one whom to know well was to love deeply aad lastingly. There was nothing of the earth earthy ia ber nature; one felt in her presence that there was the embodiment of trath and purity, and this feeling existed among all who came within the sphere of her icfiuence. Bat it was not only as an Intellectual woman that she com manded the respect and esteem of others, she was also loved for her kind- nets of heart, her strong friendship, her generosity for tbe feelings of others and ber sympathy for the suffering and dis tresaed. Her heait went oat for those bo were in need, and she strove to carry out tbe divine command as far as in her lay "to do good and to distribute lorget not." She was an active and consistent Christian, having become a member of Su James' Church in this city in her early youth. She loved tbe Church and labored for it. striving not for compli ment but simply to do her whole duty, and to follow, as near as poor frail mor tality can follow, in the iootstsps of tbe Matter, and it was fittingand very touch ing that her life sbjjuld pats out almost beneath the shadow ot tbe walls of that Church she bad so loved in life. In all tbe relations ot life she was blameless, "none knew her but to love ber," and her death has left an aching void which cau only be mellowed by time and the soothing inflaences of our holy religion. To the bereaved hearts in the sanctity ot ber home, and in wbich we dare not intrude, we can only offer our deepest sympathy in this their hour of grief, and our earnest hope that He who lenicts will witb tbe sunenng give strength and sustain. Two Vaaacla on tba Way Wilmington aod Hewbjrn are to ba Cloaely Watched. Washington, Sept. 1. The law offi cers of the Government are apprehen sive that several filibustering expeditions are being fitted out on the South At lantic coast, and have called upon the Navy Department for an increase of its patrol fleet. The Navy has replied that it has now two warships performing this service and that no other vessels are available unless the emergency is very great. Information has come to tbe Depart ment of Justice that no less than four vessels of various types, including tbe famous Dauntless, which has succeeded in running tbe blockade oftener than any of tbe other ships in the employ of the insurgents, are under suspicion; that two are unquestionably now on their way to Cuba with munitions of war, bav ing fooled the patrol, and that unless tbe cordon is more strongly drawn around the Florida coast others will slip through. From tbe most reliable information received here the filibusters are chaug ing tbe points from which tbey operate and hereafter will make attempts to load their vessels and get them on from places on the Carolina coast, rather than in Florida, where the Government has maintained tbe greater part of its patrol force in tbe past year. Wilmington and Newbern are . the places suspected ot having assisted two expeditions already to get away, and orders have been issued to tbe collectors tbere to keep careful watch on any suspicious vessels in that neighborhood.
