Tba Antwerp Oompiny 'a Pnrobteea Ba eult In Its Besotting tbe Eigbeat Point Known la More Tbsn Two Yf air. Savannah News. While the planters of cotton are in a state of disappointment at the steady de cline in the price of the staple, the tur pentine farmers are overjoyed at the greatly increased value of their product. It has been a long time since spirits turpentine brought the price at which it is now selling. It is not due to any more argent demand than usual, as there has scarcely been a day daring the past five years when the entire offerings would have been taken at tbe current price, bad the factors been disposed to sell. For a number of years certain export ers rnled tbe market to a great extent-, and when the balk of the crop was arri ving, put tbe price down to the lowest notch. When they bad a fall stock on band and tbe receipts became light, they then raised the price in order to secure large profits on their purchases. An attempt was made tbis season to bear tbe market It is said tbat some of the exporters had sold short and expect ed to buy spirits at aboat 23 cents. In tbis they were mistaken. The statistical position of the market was in favor of tbe producers. The shortage in the crop began to show op in July, when it was seen that the receipts were then aboat 20 000 casks less than for the same pe riod in 1896. It waa at this time that tbe Antwerp Naval Stores Company came to the re lief of tbe market, and by purchasing the daily receipts at about 24 to 24 cents a gallon soon came in poisetsion of about 35.000 casks, almost the entire stock at Savannah at that time. As soon as otber buyers came in the mar ket the Antwerp people continued to make purchases by bidding higher than tbe other houses, until they cornered the market and were in a position to dictate at what price tbe product was to sell. In tbe meantime they made some heavy shipments to Europe and disposed of a quantity of their stock at a good profit. The most interesting period of the boom in the spirits turpentine market bas been daring the past week, when the price steadily rose from 29J cents to 31 cents a gallon. The market closed yes terday at tbe latter price, with a good demand (or the day's receipts. Daring the recent advance the Ant werp company, after making a daily bid for tbe offerings, bas held out and al lowed other bouses to make purchases at a higher pi ice. In this way the price bas been advanced, while tbe holdings of the company have been enhanced in value. Tbe price at which spirits turpentine is now selling is higher, by 4 to 5 cents. than it bas been in neaily three years. The last time thst the price reached 31 cents was in April, 1895, and then tbe market he'd good only a day or two. It is now holding this price pretty well, and the Antwerp people seem to be in a po sition to do some dictating in tbe market Those who have sold short find them selves in somewhat of a hold, as they will either have to produce the stuff or pay the losses.
