A PAID FIRE DEPARTMENT If BMomotndid by tha Iool Board of Fira Usdttwrttm May b Approved by tha City Ooveromanr. Mr. J. b. Middleton, of Atlanta, rep resenting the Southeastern Tariff Asso ciation, ia here for tbe purpose of re rating tbe business part of tbe city. Yesterday, Mr. Middleton, together with Mr. Chss. Sebnibben, Chief of the Fire Department, and a committee from tbe local Board df Underwriters, consisting of Messrs F. H. Stedman. J. H. Boat wrigbt and C C Chad bourn, conferred with Mayor S. P. Wright and Mr. W. H. Chadbourn. chairman of the Board of Audit and Finance, to discuss the pro posed re-rating. After some discussion it was generally agreed tbat it would be practicable to have a paid fire department, as under such a department tbe rates of insur ance would be reduced and ultimately the tax-payers would be benefitted. On the other hand, if tbe volunteer system aa now in use be adhered to. the rate oa mercsntlle brick buildings will be increased 10 cents on the $100. Mayor Wright and Mr. Chadbourn suted their belief that if the local Board ol Underwriters should recommend a paid fire department ts suggested by Mr Middleton, the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Aadit and Finance would adopt measures looking to its establish ment. The l local Board of Underwriters of ail the fire insurance agents in the city will hold a meeting in t few days to con sider the wisdom of adopting Mr. Mid dleton'e suggestion. It seems probable that tbe paid sys tem will be adopted. Those who favor it. while admitting that it will be more expensive, claim tbat this will be more than counterbalanced by tbe reduction n rates of insurance. TJth cf Mr. Walter I. Tatet. Milwaukee, Wis , October 15 The Protesunt Episcopal Church of America will be known in the future simply as The Church, if the movement formally inaug urated in the meeting of tbe Milwaukee Diocesan Council to day is taken up by the dioceses generally throughout tbe country, as the clergymen and laymen firmly believe it will. In amending tbe constitution ot tne dioceie. the words "Tbe Protestant Episcopal Church' were stricken out and "Tbe Church" inserted in their stead. It is suted that thla change has been under discussion for some time in different dioceses, but tbe Milwaukee Diocese is tbe first, according to one of tbe lay delegates, to take action in the matter. The amendment to tne consti tution was adopted without discussion, having been considered at tbe council meeting in Madison last year, when it was decided to put it to a vote at this meeting.
