Bayiter, loapee tcr Osnaral Both Commands Hisbly Cimpltmaottd. The annual inspectioa of the Wil mington Light Infantry and the Naval Reserves, two military organizations which the people of Wilmington feel justly proud of, took place last night, conducted by Col. B. S. Royster, of Ox ford. Inspector General, N. C. S. G., who arrived in the city via tne Atlantic Coast Lino yesterday afternoon at 5 49 o'clock. Tne Inspectioa of the Light Infantry took place at 8 80 o'clock on the lawn in tbe rear of tbe company's handsome armory, Lieutenant Colonel Walker Taylor, of this city. Second Regiment, was present and assisted io the inspec tion. Tbe W. L. I. bays presented a natty appearance, with full racks. After this inspection. Col. Royster, accompanied by Col. Taylor and the officers of the W. L. I , Cap:ain Dan. McRae. First Lieutenant C. H. White and Second Lieutenant R. H. Cowan went to the armory of tbe Naval Re serves, where the sailor boys, looking fresh and neat in their spotless suits of white, were inspected. Tae officers of the Reserves ia attendance were Lieutenant Commander H. H. Mc Ilbenny, Ensign H. L Miller and Junior Lieutenant R. H. McKoy. Tbe Boys' Brigade of Immanael Presbyterian church, ander command of Col. Taylor, were reviewed by Col. Royster at the W. L. I. armory. Offing to business engagements Col. John F. Brnton, of Wilson, Second Regiment, State Guard, who was in vited by tbe Wilmington Light Infantry, with which company he is a great favor ite, to visit the city as a guest of tbe company and be present last night, was absent. AT THE W L I. ARMORY. While the Naval Reserves were being inspected a scene ot jollity was in progress in tbe handsome assembly hall of tbe Ligbt Iafaotry armory. All tbe privates aod non-commissioned officers of the company were present enjoying piano recitals and vocal selections ren dered by tbeir comrades. Col. John L. Cantwell was called upoa for a speech, and responded ia an eloquent manner, paving high tribute to the com pany, telling of tbe high stand the company had always possessed through out its existence, and speaking feelingly of departed members of tbe company. About this time Capt. McRae, Lieut. White and Lieut. Cowan returned and ushered into the hall Col. S. B. Royster, Col. Walker Taylor. Lieut. H H. Mc- Iibenny. Ensign H. L Miller aad Junior L ent. R. H. McKoy. Upon being called upon for a speech, Col. Royster reipanded in a few well cbosea and humorous remarks. He said that he was glad to be in Wilmington, as he had many personal friends here, and when he departed he would feel like he had made more; that the members of the Light Infantry and Naval Reserves had passed a most excellent inspection, and that ths people of North Carolina should feel proud of tbe two military companies New Hanover cauaty possesses. Continuing, ool. Royster said that the Light Infantry bad veteran of many wars in its ranks (pointing to Col. L. Cantwell), and one pleasure be bad gained by bis visit was meeting that moit distinguished gentle man; and that he (Rays'.er) felt gratified at tbe cordial reception be had received. Col. Taylor was next called upon and said that he didn't think that he had ever seen the Wilmington Light Infan try and the Naval Reserves pats a more creditable inspectioa thaa the one last night, and that he was satisfied that the two coraptnles were in fine shape and ould be ready at any time called upon. A speech was demanded of Lieut. Mcllhenny, and he responded briefly but tersely. About this time Lieut. White brought to mind that a repast was spread in the parlors across the hall, and those present , repaired there, where refreshments, em bracing things of a choice nature, were served. About midnight the party broke up. and another link to the long chain of hospitality of the W. L I. had been forged. Al the OP ta Houie. The performance at the Opera House last night by the Georgia (colored) Mm- trel Troupe was creditable in some ot the specialties, but rather inferior as a hole. The singing, especially of tbe sentimental songs, was poor; the danc- g good. The slack wire walking was very fine. The dress circle and gallery- set apart last night for tbe colored peo- pie, , were crowded the "standing room onl ly" sign, for those parts of tbe house- beii ng put up prior to 8 o'clock. . M. O. WILMINGTON MAY COME NEXT. Amnioan Teltohone and Telegraph Com paey War Add Tht Olty to Its Byitam. The fact that Norfolk has recently be come a subscriber to the American Tele phone and Telegraph Company, thereby securing speaking connection with seven thonsand other cities all over the country, suggests the inquiry, When will Wilmington's turn come? The company is running its lines southward, coming inta Norfolk from Washington and Alexandria, and there would seem to be every reason to ex pect that Wilmington will be the next city to get the long distance connec tion. Another line of the long distance tele phones is in process of establishment through the central part of the country. and is completed as far South as Hunts ville, Ala. In fact the American Tele phone and Telegraph Co. are stringing tneir wires over tbe whole coaatry, and there is little doubt that it will at no very distant day spring into sharp competition with the regular telegraph companies. It is claimed that their wires and poles are pat ap much more securely, and this claim finds its proof in tbe statement that In the September storm of this year the wires of tbe tele phone company stayed up five hours longer, and after being finally blown down were put up a good deal sooner than those of the telegraph companies. Foot Ball Qirns Friday. Everybody who wishes to encourage athletic sports should not fail to see the foot ball game Friday between the Wil mington and Greensboro teams. The Wilmington team has developed wonderfully in the last two weeks, and with the excellent coaching they have received it is easy to predict for them a victory over Greensboro. This will be the first game of the sea son, and as the two teams are very nearly equal in strength, promises to be very exciting. Tbe Wilmington team since its or ganization three years ago has made a record that any one would be proud of. having been defeated only twice in this time. The boys have gone to considerable expense to arrange games to be played here, and hope to be rewarded by hav lng a large crowd in attendance. They bave adopted as their colors white and pink, and it is safe to say their colors will never be trailed in the dust. MADE CONFESSION. Ed. Purviv, tha BCutderer ot Jaa. Blaok- wall, tha A. C. Ii.
