There is no other exercise that calls in to action so many-muscles as sparring. The act of ducking to avoid a blow is per formed by neck, arm, chest, abdominal, back, thigh, leg and foot muscles. It is asserted by gymnasium directors and in works on anatomy and training that the biceps and the other muscles on the front of the arm take no part in the delivery of a blow in sparring. If this were true, there could be no such thing as an "up per cut" blow, nor would the fighter wbo gets li!s opponent s bead "in chancery" bo able to do any damage to that oppo nent's face. The mechanism of tbe ' ' unner cut" is as follows, being generally deliv ered wi'.h tho right arm: The limb being flexed (bent at the elbow), with the hips ' and knees .lightly lient, the hips und knees are rapidly straightened, while 'the body is carried forward by the contraction , of the muscles on the front of tbe thigh und kDo joint. At the same time tbe flexed arm is carried forward and upward. If the opponent has been able to recover par tially and move the trunk and head back, he may be so far away tbat the arm is al most straight when the blow is struck, in which case the triceps, the frorjt fibers of the deltoid and the upper fibers of the peo toralis major furnish the motive power, the triceps straightening the arm and other muscles carrying the upper arm and shoulder forward. But tho opponent may be ao close that the blow is delivered while the arm is still bent at the elbow sometimes almost at a right angle. In this case the triceps take but little part in the blow, which is deliv ered through the combined action of the front fibers of tbe deltoid, the upper fibers of the pectoralis major, .the biceps, the brucniaii8 anticus, tbe coraco brachialis and the supinator longus. The biceps is tho great flexor (or bender) of the fore arm, and is assisted by the brachialis anticus, a broad, flat muscle lying under the biceps and on both sides of it. After having flexed the forearm, these muscles, continuing to act, carry the limb upward. Tbe supinator longus acts first to turn the hand over after it bas been turned backward; continuing to act, it flexes the forearm. The trapezius muscles on the upper part of the back and running up to the skull not only help to draw the arm back, but pull the bead back to get it out of the way of an advancing blow. When a sparrcr throws bis guard up to protect the face or neck, the arm move ment is performed by various muscles be tween the wrist joint and tbe middle of the back and by the upper chest muscles, while at the same time muscles of the trunk, thighs and legs maintain tbe stability of tbe body, which take part in the move ment.
