An original idea has struck a St Louis woman, as a protection against 'the kidnapping of children. She suggest a neat little brand of some sort by which each family could mark its little ones. Lacy Hoge, of Concord, is unabated and large con gregations are attending daily the services in the afternoon and at night The service in the afternoon yester day consisted of a Bible reading, which was both interesting and helpful, the prayer services by Mrs. Hoge at 7:45 o'clock in thaavening having been probably the largest since the, meet ing begun. Last night Rev. Mr. Hoge preached an eloquent and very impressive ser mon on the theme of "Prayer," taking as his text "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and unto God that which is God's." After the sermon an invitation was given to all persons who wanted to reconsecrate them selves to signify the same by shaking hands with Rev. Mr. Hoge. The larger portion of the congregation responded to the invitation and seemed to mani fest the deepest interest The hours for service to-day are 11 A. M., and 7.15 and 8.15 P. M. To-morrow, July 10th, is the day set by the' Interstate Commerce Commis sion for the hearing of the argument of counsel in the case of the complaint of the Wilminnton Tariff Association against various railroads, ; praying a reduction in freight rates from points west and east the evidence for the complainant association having been taken, as Stab readers will remember, during a session of the Interstate Com merce Commission held in this city last April. The argument will be made before ton. and Judge W. A. Day, counsel for the Tariff Association, and Judge Baxter,, leading counsel for the de fendant railroads, will argue the case. It is confidently expected that a deci sion in the case will be announced by the Commission within the next few weeks. : MEETINQ OP THE BOARD OP HEALTH. Plans Arranged for Putting Into Effect the ftew Scavenger Ordinance. The principal business which en gaged the special meeting of the Board of Health yesterday morning was the adoption of plans to make operative the special ordinance passed at the last regular meeting of the Board of Alder men with reference to the scavenger work of the city. The new ordinance provides for the division of the area of "the. city into eight districts and the Health Depart ment is empowered to advertise for bids for doing the scavenger work of each of these districts. The ordinance also stipulates that the successful bidders shall execute bonds in the sum $50 each for the faithful perform ance of their duties. License will be granted to each scavenger who re ceives an appointment It was also ordered at the meeting yesterday afternoon that tbe owner of the vacant lot on Second street near its intersection with Dock, be re quired to construct an abutment un der the'direction of the City Engineer which will event sand from wash ing into and filling the culvert below the said lot This , is the drsin which runs under tne storerooms or Messrs. Adrian & Co., corner of Front and Dock streets, and the sand from the vacant lot referred to is said to be responsible for the overflow of the store during a heavy rain' several days ago Those present at the meeting yester day morning were: - Drs. A Continual Quickening of Social Life On Wrightsville and j Carolina Beaches. SEASHORE'S BRILLIANT DANCE All Hotels Crowded With Pleasure-Seeker?. Hundreds of New Arrivals Yesterday. Dance at Ocean View Hotel Wednesday Other Events. The usual brilliant finale was given the week's round of pleasure in the city and on Wilmington's two superb seaside resorts, Wrightsville and Caro lina Beaches, last night, by the week end hop at Seashore Hotel on Wrights- tJT?L The attendance was one of. the largest and most fashionable of the season and the success of the occa sion was all that could be desired, thanks to the able management of Mr. ; Crawford as host and Mr. Green as chief clerk. A very large crowd attended from Wilmington, many of them go ing down for supper. And, too, excessive praise cannot be accorded the supper and service. .The menu was just the thing for seaside resort patrons, was elegantly prepared and served in good style. By a little past 9 o'clock the dining room had been cleared and dancing began; in time to music by the excel lent Hotel Band, and continued un til eleven o'clock when the last train left forJ;he city. It was the sec ond in the series which will be run in the contest for the two lovely silver cups. As was the case at the first race (the Fourth of July) the Dolphid, Capt Lewis Hall, came out ahead. She won despite the fact that she swamped soon after she made her first tack, and was thereby very much delayed. The other canoes in the order of their record in the race were Hep sabah, Captain Neill Emerson ; None Such, Captain Harry Short Jr. ; Reck less, Captain PJatt Davis; Nell and Ettie, Captain R. N. Sweet, and Mic mac; Captain E. H. Bridgers. The Reckless and Nell and Neltie are conoes of the second class, flat bottoms.' Messrs. Edwin Metts, and R. C. Cantwell were the judges. Hundreds of people watched the race with great interest The coming week will be one of un usual gaiety. There will be nightly dances at the Seashore hotel, the dance at Ocean View Hotel Wednesday night hops by Carolina and Atlantic yacht clubs Friday night the grand reception at Sedgely Hall Club Thursday night complimentary to the North Carolina Press Associa tion, very probably a dance by Han over 8easide Club one night during the weekr concluding as usual with the week-end ball At Seashore Hotel. Of course, in addition to all these func tions, there will be the usual round of sailing parties and the hundred and one delightful events which go to make up a round of pleasure un equalled anywhere in North Carolina and surpassed by few seaside pleasure resorts on the Atlantic coast ,.
