The County Board of Equalization
resumed Its sessions yesterday after
noon and practically completed its
work for. the season. A recess was
taken until 10 o'clock Monday morn
ing. There are a number of adjust
ments jet to be made, but for the most
part the County Commissioners will
attend to those, after adjournment of
the Board of Equalization. As before
tateiC it is probable that the Increase
in Taluatlon this year will not fall one
whit below 1600,000 or $700,000. It is
hinted that upon these figures the
Commissioners maybe able to make
a still further slight reduction in the
rate. This, howerer,. is entirely
problematical.
Upon the convening of the Board
yesterday afternoon Mr. EL W. Mal
loy appeared (and asked for a reduc
tion of the yaluatlon of 150,000 on the
Almont factory and the $100,000 wal
nation of stock on hand. The recon
sideration was granted and the matter
waa referred to the Board of County
Commissioners for further adjustment.
Petition of Gffy a Cardwell for re
duction of Taluatlon of property in
block 11S was not granted.
Values in Cape Fear township, along
the line of the Castle Hayne road,

were made as follows: William T.

BOYS' BRIQADE AT SOUTHPORT.
Bsseball Qame on Off Days Visit to 6ss-
N well Samp Notes.
Camp George, Southpoht, July
17. The Stab took its correspondent
to task: in this morning's issue for not
reporting the Brigade's defeat in base
ball at the hands, of the Southport
boys and assigned the scores as the
reason. This la partly true, but owing
to the fact that we are living such a
swift life down here, the correspon
dent, in the press of other duties, has
only been able to write every other
day. The games happened on the off
days.
Yesterday, at the invitation of Maior
Lundeen, a large part of the Brigade
visited Fort Caswell and was cour
teously escorted over the place by
Lieut. Jones. Wilbur Dosher re
mained over night at the fort as guest
of Sergeant Dili. .
The camp la pitched in semi-gloom
to-day, occasioned by the departure of
four of our lady visitors. Dr. Hail
has had to prescribe for two or three
of the boys. Wonder what's the mat
ter?
The girls remembered us all right.
for they sent us a freezer of ice cream
this morning with their compliments.
tsob" Banks didn't forget ns either.
for we are In receipt of a bag of smok
ing material from" him.- Thanks.
Fainting faces has been the order of
the night for some time past, but
when "Rabbit" Wright entered
Devane's tent last night to exercise
his artistic ability he "got his" in the
shape of a bottle of ink in the face.
Thus the cruel hand of fate crushes
budding, ambition. So mote it be. -
Mrs. Taylor, Walker, Jr., and Mrs.
W. EL Pern berton came down yester
day to spend a day with us. ;
Everything is progressing finely and
the mess tent is still a favorite. -
