Annual Visit of Colonial Dames to Old
Brunswick, N. C. i x.
The Star gladly gives space to the
following communication regarding the
annual pUgrimage of the! Colonial
Dames 'to the ruins - of St Philip's
church at Old Brunswick next Tues
day:" ' - -X ' : . i f ''XX". i :'X- '
With reference to the annual pilgri
mage of the North Carolina-Society
of the Colonial Dames to Old Bruns
wick and St. Philip's church to which
all of our citizens are cordially invited,
it may be well to inform our inhabi
tants as to the aim and purpose of
these excellent women, who are actu
ated by the patriotic motive of rescu
ing from decay and utter oblivion the
fast failing records and relics ' which
tell of noble deeds in years gone by.
In this strenuous age of nnprecedent- i
ed development there appears to be I
litlia vonratlon for the nloseers who I
established tnirtolotTy "amid the tlan-
gers of the wilderness and the, war- J
whoop of tne savage." Nor tor tne j
statesmen, who upheld the! , principles
of the Declaration of independence,
nor for the soldiers who yielded their
lives in order that these; principles
might be maintained.
Many of the neglected and forgotten
graves of the heroes of the Revolu-j
tion have been desecrated! by unholy!
hands. . For many years the moulder
ing dust of one of the bravest and the
best of North Carolina's sons has been
profaned by ruthless hands and the
special feature of the present pilgri
mage will be the re-interment in the
old grave yard of St. Philip's church
all that is mortal of Chief Justice Al
fred Moore. . v :- -i v - -
The noble - sentiment - of Rasselas
should find a lodgement still in the
hearts of our people. "I honor the
laurels which' overshadow! the graves
of our fathers."- x --xxs i i fx.x
By the courtesy of the commanding
officer of Ft Caswell the garrison band
will furnish music for the occasion and
these musicians as well as the officers
and their wives will be the guests of
the Society.. All others attending are
expected to bring their luncheon as no
refreshments will : be X sold 'ton "the
grounds." There Is no admission tee to
Old Brunswick and the only expense
will be the charge of the steamer Wil
mington of 50c for adults; 35 cents
for school children, both for the round
trip. An "abundance of pure cistern wa
ter has been provided, and rustic seats
beneath wide-spreading trees afford "ai
boundless contiguity of shade."
The steamer Wilmington will leave
her dock, foot of Market street, at 10
o'clock in the morning, a half hour
later than her schedule, May 2nd., and
will -leave - Old - - Brunswick - wharf,
which is a few hundred yards from the
church, at a: seasonable hour in the
afternoon.
