SHERMAN Democratic Congressional Nominee -Pennsylvania District Inyaded Re- publican Headquarters at New York Manager Threatened. In (Philadelphia Press.) mpw York! Oct. 18. The several members of the Republican Congres sional Campaign Committee, who were present, are still somewhat puzzled concerning the rather singular con duct of John Lindner, of Carlisle, Pa., who the other day visited their, head auarters in the St. James Building, and claiming at first to be a Republi can demanded that no speaker should be sent into the Eighteenth Congres sional District to speak in support! of Mr. Qlmstead. He finally admitted that he himself had the Democratic nomination for Congress in that dis trict .' .: s ; Finding that his protests were not receiving much consideration he threatened Chairman Sherman that if a single speaker was sent by the com mittee into the district ihe, Lindner, would go into Sherman's own district and defeat him for re-election. Mr. Sherman, who is one of the lead ing members of the House and chair mnn nt th important Committee on Indian Aflairs, has for many years represented the Utico District of New York, which will be only too proud to Tieep him in Congress as long as he is willing to serve. He replied that he was not accustomed to being threaten ed whereupon Mr. Lindner indulged in stronger terms until Mr. Sherman po litely but firmly declared the inter view at an end and Mr- Lindner retir ed by special invitation. . The committee is still wondering upon what theory he supposed that- a Democratic candidate for Congress could control the action of the Repub lican Congressional Committee. ' CHEAPER ALCOHOL 4i FOR GENERAL USE (Charlotte Observer.) Vashington, Oct. 18. Commission er Yerkes, of 4he bureau of internal revenue, believes that the enforce ment of the denatured -. alcohol law, which will go into effect Jan. 1, 1907, will necessitate the enlargement of the feld force of his bureau. Just what additional force will be neces sary to see that the provisions of thev law are carried out; will depend en-Jf tireiy upon iuture events, out snoma it become iiecessary to strengthen the forces of his offlce that the law may be "strictly adhered-to, examinations will probably be held by the civil service-commission' for appointments. Concerning the new Hw. Commis sioner Yerkes said to-day: "Consider able misapprehension exists as to the new denatured alcohol law passed at the last session of Congress. This law . will . not : go into effect until Jan uary!, 1907. :t y 'tThe denaturing process .will be ac complished on the: distillery premises wherever ' they tnay.be located where the alcohol 4s produced, in special bonded' warehouses designated and used: alone- for denaturing purposes and -for : the storage - of denaturing materials. These buildings and the operation itself will be V under closest governmental inspection and control. Denatured , alcohol will supplant very largely the consumption of wood alco hol for both domestic and. manufactur ing purposes, as lit will be cheaper, j'The price , of the . specially dena tured alcohol will : naturally vary ac cording to -the. cost of the denaturing ingredients selected to meet tne nec essities of the manufacturing indus tries. These special formulas will on ly be used where it is made perfectly apparent to the Department that the industrial interests involved cannot use completely ' denatured alcohol by reason of the presence of wood alcohol or benzinee. , v - ' "The adoption of the . legislation will require some extension to the force of the internal revenue bureau, especially for field work. It will also add very largely to the work of the chemical' division of that bureau."
