Lincolnton News: Mr. Lawson A. Bellinger, of Iron Station, spent v sev eral days last week with his son, Mr. R. H. Dellinger. While here Mr. R. H. Dellinger had his commission as first li-eutenant in the Confederate army framed and placed in Memorial Hall. The commission bears the signature of Z. B. Vance, Governor, and was carried through the war. It bears blood stains from a wound that the owner received at the battle of Get tysbur. Concord Tribune:- A certain Ca barrus farmer was in the city today, having brought to market his 1907 crop of cotton- consisting of 14 bales. It is said to be the finest lot of staple that has been brought to this city in a number of years, grading as strict good middling. On January 21st, 1908, the seller was offered 12 3-4 cents a pound for it, but refused, holding for a higher price. The staple was sold today at 9 1-2 cents, the seller sus taining a net loss of $17.50 per bale, or in the neighborhood of $245 on the entir-a lot. Salisbury Post: Rich Wilson alias Thompson, a bad negro, was ar rested here yesterday and taken to Hamlet this morning by tho chief of police of that place. The negro has been evading the officers for four months running in and out of Salis bury and Spartanburg, S. C. The crime for which Wilson was arrested was committed at Gibson, five mites from Hamlet, last November. Beachum, Esq., one of Lanesboro township's oldest and best known citi zens, spent Tuesday in Wad'esboro, and while here remarked to a repre sentative of the Messenger and Intel ligencer that he served as juror at a term of Anson county criminal court in March 1S51, 58 years ago. He was then 21 years of age and remembers the circumstances well, as hewas call ed out and fined for not being present when court opened. Later a gentle man, who was better acquainted, with public affairs than Uncle Jerry at that time got the Judge to remit the fine, charging for his service a glass of grog. Mr. Beachum says that Judge Strafige, of Wilmington, presided over the court. Asheboro, March 11. Jonah Yow, a young white man of Cedar Falls, was found dead by the roadside a few yards from his . home Wednesday morning. His death is surrounded with mystery. The young man was found with a bullet wound in his fore head, the ball passing through his skull. He was 18 years old and is survived by a young wife. The young man was at his father's house a short time before 9 o'clock Tuesday night, and seemed to be in fine spirits, it is not thought that he met death at his own hand. If so no cause can be as signed for the rash act. Foul play was suspected and the sheriff and cor oner were notified and an investiga tion was made this morning. After examining several witnesses tha sher iff turned the body over to relatives, finding that the young man died by his own harid. Winston Journal: One of the most important caaea to come before Wilkes court is that of Freehand Thirpe charged with secret assault upon, with intent to kill, Miss Mary Ball, a popular young lady of Elkin. This assault was committed, it Will be remembered, -last August at the home of Mr. Hoots, in the lower, section of the county. Miss Ball, who was teach ing in the family of Mr. Hoots, had made the acquaintance of young Tharpe and he had fall-en in love With fcer and been rejected by her. In a jealous rage, he lay in wait for her on3 'Sunday evening as . She was returning from church and shot her the ball going entirely through hr body within one inch of her heart. The life of the young lady was des paired of, but she miraculously lived and is now appearing against the young tnan in court.
