With beautiful eloquence and in ore-1 viae anu togicat sequence, tr. Smith traced the effect of John Calvin upon education, beginning when a mere lad of 14 years and already a noted scho lar, on up through his manhood, being so wonderfully precocious and ener getic that in less than a year after he entered the great University of Or leans to study law, he was teaching tne ciass. vvnen forced to flee from his own country he went to Geneva and there built up a most splendid public school system, the most won derful the world ever saw and under a compulsory educational law. Dr. Smith showed how John Cal vin's influence through the medium of Jonn Knox, the English puritans, the tention and the trial before corder was long- drawn out. The pri soner was represented by A. H. Pait, Esq., and the prosecution was repre sented by City Attorney Marsden Bel lamy and Brooke G. Empfe, Esq. Eight separate and distinct cases' were made out against Murphy, but the judgment in all-save one was suspend ed m view of: the sentence of six months on the roads in the other. The principal witness for the State Was Officer R. L. Rouse, who worked up the case in connection with (Chief Williams under the direction of the jyiayor.
