Quite a ripple of excitement was
created here yesterday by the ap

dent in this State, who was under
stood to represent ' Jay Gould, and
was said to be negotiating for the
purchase of the Fayetteville &i Flor
ence Railroad. Rumor says that Mr.
Gould proposes to build a road from
Norfolk, Va., via Fayetteville ko
Florence. Should such a road be
consummated it is Baid this 1 would
give Gould the shortest and most
direct " through railroad route Ifrom
the Atlantic to the Pacific, which
line will ran through the whole cot
ton belt, with a direct outlet to Eu
rope at Norfolk. There js a charter
for the Fayetteville & Florence Rail
road, grading on which was done
eight or nine years aso from Fay
etteville to Shoe Beel, on the Car
olina' Central Railway. : Mr. Mc
Kealhan, of this city, is the i presi
dent of the road.' There is also a char
terfora road from Fayetteville to
Goldsboro, and another from thence
to the Virginia State line in the dU
reotion of and in an air line with
Norfolk. These two charters were
consolidated by the North , Carolina

1 phrey - says that money has been
raised to build the road from Flor
jence to-'tlje Virginia line, but whether
the really represents Gould or has
Succeeded in his negotiations has not

rue speculation as to Gould's scheme
for a route to and an outlet on. the
