Capt.' C. E. Bennett, Seventh Infantry, in
command at Fort Sisseton,' Dakota, states
that' 35 lodges of : Indians are encamped
within three miles of the fort.. They are
reported to be out of food and their chil
dren are crying from hunger. The men
express themselves willing to work, and
some of them are already emploved in haul
ing government stores from Webster, Da
kota. Crissy, the agent, sent word by one
of the Indian police for these parties to re
turn to the agency, but they seemed disin
clined to do so. They say that there is
no food for them rat "the agency, v Capt
Bennett has engaged to'exert all his influ
ence to secure food and employment for
these creatures, and is awaiting instruc
tions from Gen. Terry. -
