of Aldermen of the city of Raleigh to
night, and wired at once to Mayor

with the request that be present them

. Whereas, Capt. Coghlaruand the
gallant crew of the cruiser Raleigh
have presented to this city a gun taken
from the Spanish fleet sunk by Ad
miral Dewey in Manila bay.

men of the city of Raleigh, that we
accept the gift with most grateful and
profound thanks; that we extend to
Uapt. vjognlan ana nis omcers ana
men the universal hospitality of our
city, and assure them that the city
which has the honor of being the
birth place of the hero of Cardenas
will ever hold a hearty welcome ; for
the heroes of Manila. Our people have
always been proud of the name which
our city bears, but prouder now than
ever before since our namesake in the
navy of the Union has emblazoned
about that name a halo of glory as un-
uenchableasthe stars of the heavens.
ir. Walter Raleigh was the foe of the
Spaniard and it was through Spanish
spite that his head fell upon the block,
and it is a historical incident which
links together the ages that the - ship
named in his honor, from the country
which he sought toacamre. should
avenge his death three hundred years
afterward.
Resolved. That a committee of three
from this board be appointed to select
a suitable site for the location and pre
servati6n of the gun ; and that a copy
of these resolutions be sent to the
officers of the Raleigh.

Formal Presentation of Trophy to City of

The most notable ceremony yester
day,- in connection with the visit of
Captain Coghlan. and the j officers of
the cruiser Raleigh to this city, was
the formal presentation of the Norden-
Lfeldtcannou to the city of Raleigh' by
the officers of th cruiser, j which jc
curred about 10 o'clock iu the parlors
of The Orton. The trophy Was, as
noted in yesterday's issue, informally
-presented to a committee of Raleigh
crentlemea Friday - on J board the
cruiser..
At the formal ceremony yesterday
the officers of thy Raleigh,, theelecra-
tion from the city of Raleigh, and
quite a party or wuuuustomans were
present. Captain Coghlan made the
presentation speech. He said:
'I take this occasion"gntIemen, of

'We hope you will accept it in the
spirit m which it is given; not from
its intrinsic value, but as an expres
sion of love and esteem of the officers
and crew for the people of the citv
that has given the cruiser her name."
The speech of acceptance on the part
of the city was by R. -N. tSinams, E-sci
one oi ine most Dnuiant junior mem
bers of the Raleigh Bar.; His speech
was as follows: '
Gentlemen To me has been dele
gated the honor of receiving this trophy
at your hands. In behalf, therefore, of
the Mayor and the citizens of Kaleigh
.r accept it ana render to you our
thanks, it is a ntting token to come
from you to us. It is thB appropriate
trophy for those who bear Worth Uaro
Una's capital s name to bring back to
North Carolina's soil. It is well that
you come bearing the spoils of victory.
for North Carolina, like the Roman
mother, desires to see her sons return
with their shields or upon them. If
we commend you for your bravery it
is the commendation of a warlike peo
ple. jNorth Uaronna was hrst in the
revolution, at Alamance and Mecklen
burg; first in the civil war, at Bethel;
first in the Spanish war, at Cardenas ;
and now to this list of rare distinctions
she adds the proud honor of having
been hrst at Manila, through the ves
sel that bore her capitals name I We
congratulate you, gentlemen, that you
have the privilege or manning a vessel
named for the capital of a State upcm
whose standards the eagles of victory
perch and upon whose (banners there
is no siain. we congratulate our
selves, on the other hand, that the ves
sel dearer-than all others to North
Carolina hearts is manned by such
brave and such noble men. We are
proua tnat it was given to "our ves
sel11 to be the leader m the greatest
naval victory m all the jannals of war.
We are proud of the vessel that fired
the first shot at the yellow flag of
Spanish despotism in far off Manila
bay. We are proud of the captain
that commanded her. Though others
may misunderstand him or purposely
malign his name, the citizens of Ra
leigh will staad behind him in all that
he has done. And we are proud of the
men that he commanded, the men be
hind the guns. . Great was the captain,
great was the admiral the peerless
Dewey, than whom no greater ever
lived but as great as either were the
men.
We are proud of this trophy that
you've brought us, telling as it does
of the matchless valor of American
hearts and the deathless glory of Amer
ican arms. We are proud that it is a
Spanish gun. We promise you that
it shall be the only Spanish thing in
town. Until recently our city colors
were yellow and red, Tmt we've
changed them now. They looked too
much like Spaniards or smallpox
one as naa as the ether ana we
didn't want either one. j So we have
changed them and they, are now white
and red the colors of Bir Walter Ka
leigh. And in this connection it gives
me pleasure to say tol you, captain,
and to your brave men, that we now
have in course of manufacture a hand
some nag of the new city colors,
which shall bear the coat-of arms of
the State, and which upon its comple
lion we shall tender to i you as ' some
token of our esteem.
Again permit me to sav that we
thank you for this trophy that you've
brought. We shall plaice it in one of
our public parks. .Our wish is that as its
mouth shall never speak thunder upon
the held of battle again, so may the
mouths of those be hushed who would
malign the motives of I the men who
captured it. A mute monument it shall
be to their bravery, more eloquent
than' words, more substantial than
flattery. Though silent, yet shall it
speak to the youth of our State, en
couraging them to noble deeds, and
inspiring in them the desire to follow
in the footsteps of those heroes of ours
who have stricken the shackles from
two tyrannized races, redeemed from
monarchism ' and mediaevalism the
last foot of American i soil, captured
the last strongholds of Spanish despot
ism, demonstrated to the world that
republicanism means something more
than selhshness, and blazoned once
more upon the pages bf history the
eternal truth that the right must al
