Cultivate the peach orchard in the same manner as when cultivating corn. For grounds limited in extent dwarf trees will be found quite an advan tage. Cherry culture is the cheapest of all fruit culture. Plant good trees and let them alone. Do not look for a fine crop of fruit from any tree that lost its leaves pre maturely last fall. One of the best washes for fruit trees is a lime whitewash to which a small quantity of carbolic acid has been add ed. Failure to provide good drainage so that the roots are too wet and setting the trees too eep when planting are two leading causes of root rot among fruit trees. . , No matter .what crop is grown for the first four or five years after setting out, thorough and frequent cultivation is essential at least during the early, part of the growing season. One of the cheapest and best ways of fighting Insect pests in the orchard is by giving a good flock of poultry the run of it Their natural instinct 19 to pick up every bug, Insect and worm they see. The removal of a tree to a new local ity, no matter how much care is taken in making the change, always results in weakening its vitality. Hence good care should be given until the tree starts to growing thriftily again. St Louis Republic. APHORISMS. What loneliness Is more lonely than 'dlstruBt? SHANGDAMS NOW THE STORM CENTER An Imbroglio Resulting from Jealousy and Suspicion of the Powers. MAY ASSUME SERIOUS ASPECT The British Landed Troops Friday and Fraace is Hurrying Forces There from Tonquio Turmoil in the Valley of Yaoftse Kiang. By Cable to the Morninic Star. London, August 19. Whatever of interest may attach to the events re ported in the night's dispatches is de stroyed by the capture of Pekin, as most of the messages relate to matters preceding and leading up to the cap ture of the Chinese capital. General Linevitcb, commander of the Russian troops in Pechili, reports to St Peters burg that on August 12ih the Chi nese forces intended to give battle at Che Sin, where were concentrated fifty battalions of the best Manchu troops, commanded by Oeneral Tung Fuh Siang, but that losing courage, they retreated hur riedly, not waiting for an attack to be made. The eyes of the world, which have been fixed hitherto on Pekin, are turn ing to Shanghai, where an imbroglio resulting from the jealousy and sus picion of the powers will possibly shortly assume a serious ..aspect. The British landed Gurkas and Bombay regiments on Friday and France is hurrying seventeen hundred Tonkin troops thither, some or whom are re ported to have arrived already. The situation in the valley of the Yangtse Kiane, at Wu Chang, is seri ous. Chang Si Tung's troops mutinied, but the outbreak was quelled. Conflicting Reports. London, August 18. The second edition of the Daily Telegraph pub lishes a special dispatch from Shang hai which say 8 : "The allies entered Pekin unop posed and met with a friendly recep tion from Prince Ching. All the hos tile elements have already escaped from the city. The Imperial court left for Shen Si on August 11, with the Manchus. The other troops have gone southwest, with the object of drawing off the allies and preventing them from following up the court." Shanghai, August 18, 10.20 A. M. The general attack on Pekin began August 15th, in the morning. The enemy obstinately resisted. The same evening, the Japanese demolished the Cham Lang and Tong Chi gates and entered the capital. The other armies entered by the Tong Quien gate. They sent detachments at once to the lega tions, where the ministers were found safe. Vienna, August lb. The Austrian Foreign Office has received a dispatch announcing that the Austrian min ister at Pekin is slightly wounded. The follow ing was issued to-night: "To the Democrats of the United States In order that the fight for the rescue of the country from Republican policies may be carried on everywhere with vigorous earnestness, we urge all citizens throughout the United States who are willing to support the Kansas City platform to meet in their respective communities on Saturday afternoon or evening, September 1st, 1900, for the purpose of organizing city or precinct Democratic clubs, where such clubs have not already been organized. These organizations being Democratic should avoid osten tation and extravagance. The fight must be carried on by American citi zens in behalf of American principles, and there should be no delay in per fecting club organization. When a club is organized the secretary should at once send to W. R. Verdict In the Case of Ex-Secretary of State Caleb Powers, Accessory to the Murder of William Qoebel By Telexraub to the Morning Star Georgetown, Ky August 18. "We, the jury, find the defendant guilty, and fix his punishment at con finement in the penitentiary for the rest of his natural life." This was the wording of the verdict rendered to-day in the case of ex Secre tary of State Caleb Powers, charged with being an accessory before the fact to the murder of William Goebel. The jury retired at 1:32 P. M. and returned its "verdict at 2:25, having been out only fifty-three minutes. The vote in favor of a life sentence was unanimous. When the verdict of guilty was re turned, Powers, for the first time dur ing the weary six weeks of the trial,, betrayed bis feelings. Under all of the trying incidents of the trial he had maintained a .changeless expression. The verdict of guilty, however, appar ently staggered him. He was sitting near the door of the jury room and when the jurors knocked on the door summoning the sheriff, his face took on an anxious look. When the twelve men filed into the room and took their seats, and as Clerk Penn called the roll of the jurors the pris oner did not appear to be more ex cited than the rest of the spectators. "Have you made a verdict, gentle men?" inquired the court. "We have," the jurors assented, and at the same time Mr. Stone, the foremaD, passed the verdict up to the clerk, who read it aloud. Powers, always pale, grew ghastly white as the verdict was read, and his face betokened great mental anguish. Then, somewhat regaining his composure, he turned to the Misses Dangerfield, who had been in conver sation with him, and said: "I was not expecting that. The verdict is unjust" There was no sort of demonstra tion following the verdict and the vast crowd filed out of the court house al most in silence. Powers remained in the court room for some after the- verdict was-en-dered, in conference with his attor neys, who will at once move for a new trial and, failing in that, will take an appeal. When the jurymen entered the jury room( Juror Stone, the oldest man on the panel, was elected foreman. Juror Porter, the only Republican on the jury, the first to speak, said: 'Gentlemen, I am a Republican and I have said that I did not believe Goebel's murder was the re sult of a conspiracy. I did not think Caleb Powers could be guilty ; but I have heard the evidence and I am 'convinced he is." Others also made talks and it is said one of the men of the jury intimated tha th e thought the death penalty ought to be inflicted. However, when a ballot was taken all twelve of the jurors voted for life imprisonment. The jury which sat in the case was composed of eight Democrats, three anti Goebei Democrats and one Re publican. Claimed That It Is Necessary to Follow and Capture the Fugitives and Then Install a Strong Government. Special Berlin Letter, Copyrighted 1900 by the Associated Press. 1 Berlin, August 18. The flight of the Dowaoer Empress and the disap pearance of the Emperor of China is regarded as of much greater and last ing importance than the mere taking of Pekin, and the complications re suiting therefrom are speculatively diicusse d by the press and in political circles The overwhelming opinion is that since all the powers have agreed to install a strong central government at Pekin,. it becomes necessary, first to destroy or at least to render harm less the fugitive government which is responsible for the whole : Chinese eru ption. Therefore, it is claimed it is nrcessary to follow and capture the fugitives. This probably will call for the employment of large additional forces besides those which are now in China Surmises as to whether the United States, Great Britain and Japan wi.l also share therein or leave the burden to Russia, France and above all, to Germany, nil the papers to day, Th- Gci man government adheres to th.r view that perfect harmony pre vails among the powers regarding im mediate action in China. A number of the opposition papers express a deep dissatisfaction with the ignoring of the Reichstag and the whole of the Emperor's China policy, declaring it far exceeds the limit laid down by Count von Buelow, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, in his circular to the ruling princes of Germany on July 11. At Emperor Williams'jdinner to Field Marshal Count von Waldersee. last evening, at Wilherashohe, the China situation in its various bearings was thoroughly discussed. Herr von Brandt, a former minister to unma. in tne missionary organ, Chriseliche Welt, puts the largest amount of blame for the Chinese out break on the missionaries, citing mass of evidence in support of his assertions. He says: "Two-thirds of the work of the legations and consula tes in China had been occasioned by the complaints, demands and claims of missionaries.7 r WILLIAMS BROS., WHOLESALE GROCERS AND COMMISSION MERCHANTS. 16 & 18 North Water Street, WILMINSTON, N.
