E refer our readers to the annual statfment of
wW the .-Etna insurance Company, of Hartford,
which will be found in another column. This suc
cessful institution was incorporated by the Legislature
of Connecticut in 1819, with a perpetual charter. Its
capital is !j!o00.(>0l>, and its accumulations exceed
!*>HOO,000 more, making its entire assets over ^!l,30U,-
UOO, invested as detailed iu the statement referred to.
These results indicate that during the period of near
ly forty years since its org.inization, (without a single
change of its chief officer,) its business has been con
ducted with judgment and prudence. It has been
thus far sucecsslui in an eminent degree, discharging,
as we arc informed, all its obligations by the payment
of about (en million dollars for losses, without asking a
day’s delay in any instance. It has had but little lit
igation, notwithstanding the immense number of trans
actions niade. In order to attain as much c>^rtainty as
, » » 1. e • J.- 1-1 ' possible in such a business as insurance, it has been
re.iueated to state the number of insertions desired, or i r \ .

: risks into about fifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain
the amount insured on each class, the amount of
premiums received thereon, and the amount of
losses upon each. This classification, extending
I over a long period, and covering property to a very
! large amount, furnishes reliable data, and pre
sents a sound, substantial basis of actual experience,
upon which to conduct its business. Insurance is not
i a matter of luck or chance, as many suppose: its ha
zards are ascertainable, and its principles are capable
■ of being reduced to a system, the practical working
' and risults of which are as certain as that of any other
business. The .Ktna Company, by ulhering rigidly
to its system, and placing its business upon a healthy
basis, has obtained the confidence of the community
to an extent surpassed by no other Company iu the U.
States, and has increased its business and its income
from year to year with a steady growth. One great
source of its security is the wide distribution of its
risks—a policy which it pursues with great strictness
—limiting the amount to be covered in each locality.
B}’ this course it has passed, with comparative impu
nity, through some of tlie most sweeping and destruc
tive fires, which have swallowed up other companies
less cautious in their business. It is a system like
this, based upon experience, which gives stability and
soundness to a company, and to the assured conlidence
and security.—Baltiniorc I'litriot.
