JPire Insurance.
h refer our readers to the annual statement o/
, .T *'’® Insurance Company, of Hartford,
which will be fo ind in another cohimn. This suc
cessful institution was incorporated by the Legislature
ot (.-onnecticut in 18I'.», with a perpetual charter. Its
Cfyiital is !*!500.000, and its accumulations exceed
>SOO,nn() more, making its entire assets over iil,300,-
invested as (ietailed in the statement referred to.
I hese results indicate that during the period of near
ly torty years since its organization, (without a single
change of its chief officer,) its business has been con-
ductel with judgment and prudence. It has been
thus far snccesslul in an eminent degree, discharging,
as w^e ire informed, all its obligations by the paymeni
of about ten million ilollars for losses, without asking a
day’s ilelay in any instance. It has had but little lit
igation, notwithst.anding the immense number of trans
actions made. In order to .“ittain as much certainty as
possible in such a business as insurance, it has been
the practice of the Company, for several years, at
great labor, carefully to classify and arrange their
risks into about tifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain
the amount insured on each class, the amount of
premiums received thereon, and the amount of
losses upon each. This classification, extenling
over a long perioiJ, and covering property to a very
large aniount, furnishes reliable Jala, and pre
sents i‘ sound, substantial basis of actual experience,
upon which to conduct its business. Insurance is not
a matter of luck or chance, as many suppose; its ha
zards are ascertainable, and its principles are capable
ot being reduced to a system, the practical working
ami rtsults of which are as certain as that of any other
i business. The .^iltna Company, by adhering rigidly
I to its system, an*l'placing its business upon a healthy
; basis, has obtained the confidence of the community
I to an extent surpassed by no other Company in the U.
I States, and has increased its business and its income
I trom year to year with a steady growth. One great
j source of its security is the wiile distribution of its
I risks—e policy which it pursues with great strictness
; —limiting the amount to be covered in each locality.
; By tiiis course it has jiassed, with comparative impu-
I nity, through som* of the most sweeping and destru',’-.
■ tivc tires, which have swallowed up other companies
less cautious in their business. It is a system like
tljis, based upon experience, which gives stability and
soundness to a company, and to the assured confidence
: auil security. — Haltimore Putriot.
