PROSPECTIS
I OF
'THE NORTH CAROLINA PRESBYTKKl.W.
tlHE Presbyterian Church in North Carolin.i Ims
long labored under a serious disalvantage from
' the want ot a journal to advocate her claims and rep-
j re.sent her interests. It is estimated that only lono
' I’resbyterian Weeklies are taken in the bounds of oiiv
three Pi’esbyteries. We have 13,00(.l Communicants
land it is safe to infer that there are 30,000 Presbjte-
' rians in principle iu the State. Our Synod stand.s
. tifth in the Union in point of numbers, and her mein-
j bership is greater thari that of any Synod South or
, West of Pennsylvania. (Jur sister States on the North
; and South, neither of which has a membership so
I large as ours, publish the Central, and the Southern
' I’resbyterian, for the benefit of their people. The
I time has come when the Presbyterian Church in North
I Carolina should likewise do her duty to her children.
^ It is a conceded and important fact, that hundreds of
I our members will take a State paper who will take no
! other. The Paper is needed to be the organ of our
I Synod and 1‘resbyteries—to elevate and enlighten the
1 piety of our membership by cliffusing evangelical
knowledge—to promote the cause of Education—to
develope the talents of our .Ministry, and to strength-
i en the attachment of our people to the soil and sanc-
' tuaries of their own State.
If our Church in other States, and other Churches
in this State, can supply their members with a Re- \
ligious journal, why may not we' Are North Caro j
lina Presbyterians inferior in talent, energy and ,
patriotism to their neighbors on the North or South, '
; or to Christians of other denominations at homer !
W ith the same or better opportunities of accomplish- ■
ing this workj shall we leave it undone"' In the Ian- .
guage of one of our most able and u.seful Ministers, ^
an ailopted son of our State, “It ought to have been j
undertaken 20 years ago, but it is not too late to be- I
gin to do right ” |
In the last two or three months, a fund of about i
^oOQO iia.s been subscribed as a permanent capital. I
At a meeting of the contributors, held at Greensbo- !
rough on the I4th of Maj, Rev. A. Baker, Chairman, i
— the Paper was unanimously located at Fayetteville, '
under tiie name and title of the Noktu Caholi.na
PK^;slJYTl;Rl.^^. Rev. Wm. N. Mebane aud Rev
George MeNeill were elected Editors: Rev. Messrs
George McNeill, Win. N. .Mebane, .-V. Baker, and C. 1
H. Wiley, and -Messrs. George McNeill, Sr., John H. i
Cook and David .Murphy were appointed an Executive i
('ommittee, to establish the Paper und manage its
busine.ss ali'airs.
It is our wish and design to make the North Caro-
, i^iNA I’KtsBYTKRiAN a joumal of tho first class, equal
to the best iu the country in typographical appear- j
auce and in adaptation to the wants of our Churches.
Its columns will afford the latest intelligence, both
foreign and domestic, and special care will be taken ,
to give a full and accurate summary of State nows, j
The name of the I’aper is designed to be an exponent :
of its character and contents. From conviction, it
will advocate the conservative, orthodox. Old School
doctrines and order of the Church.
Our tirst appeal is to our own people—to N. V
Presbyterians. W hilsi we rely confidently upon their
f.ivor. v>’c trust that the native sons of North Carolinn
who have found homes in other States, and the adopt
ed citizens of our State who form so important an
element in our .Ministry and membership, will take a
deep interest in this enterprise and give it their
hearty support.
