These results indicate that duriug the period of nearly i f, rtv years since its organization, (without a single lhanpe of its chief officer,^ its business has been con- ^ .Iiicted with judgment and prudence. It has been 4 thus far su«cessful in an emiucut defrree, discharging, ■ we are informed, all its obligations by the payment . f about '’lilliou d ‘Uir,'‘ for losses, without asking a il.iv's delay in any instance. It has had but little lit- ii:ation. notwithstanding the immense number oftrans- actions made. In order to attain as much i-ertainti/ as jiossible in such a business as insurance, it has been the practice of the Company, for several years, at great labor, carefully to classify and arrange their risks into about fifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain the amount insured on each class, the amount of pre miums received thereon, and the amount of losses up on each. This clussitication, extending over a long period, and covering property to a very large amount,fur- nishes reliable data, and presents a sound, substantial basis of actual experience, upon which to conduct its I’m business. Insurance is not a matter of luck or chance, u'.anv suppose: its hazards are ascertainable, and * |Ut. j.i-inoiples capable of being reduced to a system, the rai tii-ftl working aud results of which are as certain tb it of any other business.
