ON BEAUFORT HARBOR,
ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1857.
Ci.\R(>LlN.\ CITY is situated on an elevated plain,
about 15 feet above tide water, immediately on
the waters ofBeaufort Harbor. This location tor a
great commercial City was selected by men of com
mercial experience, after a full examination of all the
lands on the Harbor of Beaufort, and in anticipation
of the construction of the great Central Rail Road
from said Harbor through the State of North Carolina,
ooiiiiecting with the Hues of the Rail Roads of Ten
nessee coming east from Memphi.s on the .Mississippi,
and also in anticipation of the con.struction of a Hail
Koad from Carolina City through the counties of Ons
low, Duplin, Sampson, ami the town of Fayetteville,
to the Coal Fields on Deep Stiver. The Atlantic and
■N'ortii Carolina Kail Road, from ('arolina City, to
Goldsborough, will be opened by t!;e 1st January next;
the North ('arolina Rail Road is in operation to the
town of Salisbury, from which point the construction
of the great Western Rail Road, through the moun
tains to the Tenncssire line, is steadily progressing.
The Kail Koad through Fayetteville to the Coal FieMs
has tor some time occupied the attention of the .''tate,
and doubtless will, eventually be put in operation,—
that part between F.iyettevilie and the Coal Fields be
ing iu rapid course of constructio'i. 'I'he completion
ot these great Rail Roads will carry the agricultural j
and mineral products of the State to one of the finest i
harbors on the Southern coast, and must at an early ,
day builil up on it.s w iteis a tlourishing City.

trated by said Kail I'.oads, have easy communication
with Beaufoil Harbor b\ navi;;able Kivcrs and Souuds.
C»f the Harbor ol lieautort, we believe it to be un
necessary now to spe.ak: the depth of its waters, its
proiiniity to the (.iiill Stream, (the highway of sliips. i
and its capacity lor all commercial purposes, are not
only well known to every North Carolinian, but have
attracted the attention of the country generally.
The Carolina City Company believe that the advan-

many; tneir lainl is a liij;h and level plain, looking

OF
THE NORTH (WHOLINA PRESBYTERIAN.
/g^HE Presbyterian Church in North Carolina has
H long labored under a serious disadvantage from
the want ot a journal to advocate her claims and rep
resent her interests. It is estimated that only 1000
Presbyterian Weeklies are taken in the bounds of our
three Presbyteries We have 13,000 Communicants,
and it is safe to infer that there are 30,000 Presbyte
rians in principle in the State. Our Synod stands
fifth in the Union in point of numbers, aud her mem
bership is grCHter than that of any Synod South or
West of Pennsylvania. Our sister States on the North
ami South, neither of which has a metubership so
large as ours, publish the Central, and the Southern
Presbyterian, for the benefit of their people. The
time has come ivhen the Presbyterian Church in North
('arolin.i sliould likewise do her duty to her children.
It is a conceded and important fact, that hundreds of
our iiieiiiliers will take a State paper who will take no
other. i'he Paper is needeil to be the organ of our
Synod and Presbyteries—to elevate and enlighten the
{dety of our membership liy diffusing evangelical
kii. wledge—to promote the cause of Education—to
deveiope the t.aleuts of our Ministry, aud to strength
en the attachment of our people to the soil and sanc-
tu:irie.s of their own State.
1 f fiur Church in other St;ites, a"d other Churches
in this .'^tate, can supply their members with a Re
ligious journal, why may not we? Are North Caro
lin.T Presbyterians inferior in talent, energy and
|iatriotism to their neighbors on the North or South,
or to Christi.iiis of other denominations at home?
With the same or better opportunities of accomplish
ing this work, shall we leave it undone? In the lan-
gua>;c of one of our most able and useful Ministers,
an adopted sou of our State, “It ought to have been .
undertaken 20 years ago, but it is not too late to be
gin to do right.”
In the last two or three months, a fund of about
.'s.'>uiMi has been subscribed as a permanent capital.
.\t a meeting of the contributors, held at Greensbo-
roii;!h ou the 1 1th of May, Rev. A. Baker, Chairman,

II. Wiley, and Messrs. George McNeill, Sr., John H.
'■ and l»avid Murpliy were appoiuted an Executive
Coinmittee, to establish the Paper and manage its
bubin- ss all ars.
It is our wish and design to make the Nonril C.Mio-
'.;SA Phksbytkrivs a journal of the first class, eiiual
to the best in the eountry in typogr.aphicul appear-
■aiK-e and in adaptation to the wants of i>ur Churches.
I |'.uunl^ will afford the latest intellijience, both
torei in :in 1 1 miestie, and special care will be taken
to ;;ive a !iill .Mid ;ircur:ire summary of State news.
The II line of the Paper is designel to l>e an exponent
of it- eliara' ter and contents. From couviction, it
will a Ivi.eate the conservative, orthoilox, Old School
doi tr'.ii. .' and or ler of th-- Church.
(•ur lit >t appeal is t" our own people—to N. C.
I’re-oyterians. Whilst vve rely confidently upon their

I who havi' found homes in other States, and the adopt-

I eli'iiient in our Ministry and membership, will take a

hearty support,

' discount of 10 per cent, will be allowed. Our Mini.s-
i ter.s and Elders are earnestly desired to act as .Vgents,
I and all others friendly to the cause will please assist
in procuring as many subscribers as possible, and for-
i ward the names, h;i Auyu.it 1j^ to this Office. As
Soon as 150() subscribers are obtained, the first num
ber wiil be issued. If a faithful and vigorous effort

I be able to begin the publication at the end of that
time with a paying subscriptijti list of at least 3000.

BY ANDREW J. STEDMAN,
A .MEMBER OF THE NORTH-CAROLINA BAR.
W V offering to the Public my Magazine, I claim for
Mt the Editorial ( hair no superiority over that de-
partiiifiit of other like Periodicals; but I do claim for
the talent (•{ N irth i'arolina, and the South generally,
that will be broufilit to its support, Southern patron
age. .\nd 1 also, as a Southern man, and ihe Editor
of a Southern M.agazine, claim at the hands of the
Southern countr; , all 1 especially of North Carolina,
that :.id aii'l support that will here, at home, establish,
upon a firm basis, a f' unt;iin of Literature, and ex
clusively 1*. Home Literary Magazine.
Many are the Magazines now published in the
NortJiern States th.it .are flooding the whole Southern
count ry. There is not. (it is jirobable,) a county in
any Southern State that is not visited by "Harper,”
••Graham,'’ “Peterson,” or “(jodey;” while here, in
North Cft?^lina and the South, where genius unsur
passed and uneiiualed reigns, the literary talent that
is brought into exercise is cled'Cated to the support of
Northern .Nlagaziiu s. while .Southern enterprise, taste
anu talent bow in iniiul'ie submission to such suicidal
policy of Southern contributors.
Why, 1 ask, cannot irc—North Carolina, the South
—send greeting to our Southern clime a Magazine,
accept.ible for th' nianr iua!ities that adorn the pages
of the most chaste, eleg iut and polite Periodicals? It
is true that the South has her .\lagazines; but few in
number are they, and unknown, compared to the pub
lications of the .North, which every mail lirings to our
homes, filled with the result of hired labor, and teem
ing with unpardonable sedition.
Then 1 appeal to North (Carolina and other Southern
States to aid me in my enterjirise, aud in promoting a.
liter, try taste .imoiigst those upon whom, as a South
ern man. I It ive c'aiins.
