F'ire Insurance.
WE refer our readers to the annual statement of
the ,Etna Insurance Company, of Hartford,
witich will be found in another column. This success
ful institution was incorporated by the Legislature of
Connecticut in 1S19, with a perpetual charter. Its
capital is y.ji»0,U'J0, aud its iiccumulatious exceed
more, making its entire assets ever •'jiiJOO,-
000, invested as detailed in the statement referred to
These res-ults in licate that during the period of nearly
forty years since its or§aniiation, (without a single
chiinge of its chief otficer,) its business has been con
ducted with judgment and prudence. It has been
thus far successful in an eminent degree, discharging,
as we are informed, all its obligations by the payment
of (ibout teri million dollart for losses, without asking a
day s delay in any instance. It has had but little lit
igation, notwithstanding the immense numberoftrans-
actions made, lu order to attain as much certainty as
possible in such a business as insurance, it has been
the practice of the Company, tor several years, at
great labor, carefully to classify and arrange their
risks into about fifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain
the amount insured on each class, the amount of pre
miums received thereon, and the amount of losses up
on each. This classificaiion, extending over a long
period, and covering property to a very large amount, fur
nishes reliable data, and presents a sound, substantial
basis of actual experience, upon which to conduct its
business. Insurance is not a matter of luck or chance,
as many suppose; its hazards are ascertainable, and
its principles capable of being reduced to a system, the
practical working and results of which are as certain
as that of any other business. The .Etna Company,
by adhering rigidly to its system, and placing its busi-
ne.ss upon a healthy basis, has obtained the confidence
of the community to an extent surpassed by no other
Company in the U. States, and has increased its busi
ness and its income from year to year with a steady
growth. One great source of its security is the wide
distributiou of its risks—a policy which it pursues
with great strictness—limiting the amount to be cov
ered in each locality. Ry this course it has passed,
with comparative impunity, through some of the most
sweeping and destructive tires, which have swallowed up
other companies less cautious in their business. It is
a system like this, based upon experience, which gives
stability and soundness to a company, and to the as
sured confidence and security.—Baltimure I'atriut.

Number 3 is a new and revised edition of the North
Carolina Reader, first published in 1851. Numbers 1
and 2 just issued, complete the series, which is, as a
; whole, cheaper than an^ other series of Headers in the
j United Stales, and as complete.
j The Editor (Prof. Hubbard) in his Preface to Num
ber 1 deems it proper to allude to a few of the peculiar
' advantages aimed at by the Superintendent of Common
I Schools while making efforts to have this work com-
I pleted. These are,
1, The encouragement ‘jJ a feeling of xelf-deiieitdrncf,
I and the enlistment of popular sentiment in Itelialf of
! the StJite and its institutions. It was not thought im-
1 portant, however, to have more than one number of
I the Readers of merely a local interest.
2, To remfd;/ the evil ei-eri/tchere romjd'ihifd of in com
mon schools, of a per^ietual chanyc in teit l>ook!>: ttn ex
pensive habit, and one which injures the Schools liy
preventing the children from being classified. A se
ries of home Readers, it was supposed, would be cer
tainly used, and this great evil thus avoided.
3, Economi/, tne popular system cJl' Readers being
too long and being made so often merely to add to
the profits of authors and publishers.
This series is to consist of fewer numbers than
those generally used, and it is believed that these
numbers are sufficient, while if the system were uni
versally used in the State, the sum saved to parent
and children would amount to seveial thousand dnllars
annually.
4, To put in the kands of children learning to read com
positions sujficienlli/ fumiliar but not of the cUurucler called
childish comjiositions, containing, in lessons easy enough
for all ages, correct specimens of style, interesting in
matter, and inculcating proper morals, and religiou.s
instruction.
The prices are, for No. 1, 25 cent.': No. 2, 37^ cents
and No. 3, 75 cents. A liberal deduction from these
prices to Merchants and School Teachers.
