Numbers 1 ati'l '2 Just issued, complete the series, which is, au a whole, cheaper than any other series of Readers in the United States, and as complete. The Kditor (Prof. Hubbard) in hia Preface to Num ber 1 deems it pioper to allude to a few of the peculiar advantages aimed at by the Superintendent of Common Schools while making efforts to have this work com pleted. These are, 1. The ei)Courajeiiient of a feeliinj of xelf-dependence, and the enlistment of popular sentiment in behalf cf the State and its institutions. It was not thought im portant, iiowever, to have more than one number of the Readers of merely a local interest. 2, Tv ll iiikIi/ thi eril ei'eri/icheri: cuinphibied of in com mon achooh, ;/■(/ perpetual ehanye in text bookx; an ex pensive habit, and one which injures the Schools by preventing the children from being classified. A se ries of hom« Readers, it was supposed, would be cer tainly used, anJ this great evil thus avoided. ;J, Kconomi, ttie popular system of Readers being too long and being made so often merely to add to the jirotits of authors and publishers. This series is to consist of fewer numbers than those generally used, ami it is believed that these numbers are sutiicient, while if the system were uni versally used in the State, the sum saved to parent*! aud children would amount to several thousand dellars annually. 4, 7’" put in the kandy of children learniny to read com- 1‘osiiioux .tiujicientl;/ fnnUiar hut not of the chunicter ctil/td childish comj'OKition.f, containing, in lessons easy enough for all ages, correct specimens of style, interesting in matter, and inculcating proper morals, aud religious instruction. Fuyetteville, .luly 2‘.'. 21*- F'ire Ins%u*anc€. \\ E refer our readers to the annual statement of THE NORTH CAROLINA STATIST AND MAGAZINE OF USEFUL INFORMATION. ABIHF] undersigned p)roposes to Publish in the t?ity ■- of Raleigh, a xemi-annual JOURN.AL, of the above title, devoted exclusively to the dissemination of STA TISTICAL INFOllMATION. The want of such a Journal is felt by every intelli gent citizen, who desires to become at all acquainted with the resources of the State, our present condition, future prospects, ^c., and by none so much as by our Legislators. That we have no regular system of statistics, cannot be attributed to any want of material. There .are large amounts of valuable and interesting information scattered through our Legislative and Executive Docu ments and Records, which, in their present situation, for all practical purposes, might as well be in the (’hi- nese language. Besides what our Legislative archives contain, our newspapers often publish valuable statis tical information, which is either lost, or if preserved by a very few, is so inconvenietit to find when wanted, that the facts are soon forgotten. The same may be said of the Reports and Statements from time to time made by our incorporated companies, and others en gaged in .Manufactures, Mines, Commerce, Kc. To collect the.se various items of information, anil give them to the public iu a shape easj' of reference aud for perpetual preservation, as well as to gather from all available resources, everything bearing di rectly or indirectly on our wealth, prosperity and in dustry, is the design of the JOURNAL now ofl’ered for public patronage. So far as the plan for conductiug the same has been matured, the pages of the STATIST will lie devoted to the arrangement of uch tables relating to our POPULATKfN, AGRICULTURE, COM.MERCE, EDU CATION, PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS, MANUF.AC- TURES, FISHERIES, MINES, alid Social Statistics generally, as will present their condition, and our pro gress iu each. It is also designed to contain the Reports (condenxid) of the Public Treasurer, Commissioners of the Sinking Fund, Superintendent of Common Schools, and all other State Officers and Boards; as also. Statements and Reports of the condition aud progress of the vari ous Railroad and Navigation Companiei. The ST.ATIST will be put to press as soon as a sutii cient number of responsible names are obtained to pay the e.xpenses of publication. The numbers will cont.iin each, not less than 1-50 PAGES of closely printed mat ter, making a book of :jOO l’.\iES, or more, to which will be addad a full au 1 coniplete index.
