The price of the new edition is not greater than that of the old, though, as it is scarcely necessary to say to the Profession in North Carolina, its value has been greatly increased by Judge B.'ittle’s Notes, References and Corrections. E. J. HALE & SON. Fayetteville, April 5, 1858. Wire Insurance. WE refer our readers to the annual statement of the .iHtna Insurance Company, of Hartford, which will be found in another column. This success ful institution was incorporated by the Legislature of Connecticut in 1819, with a perpetual charter. Its capital is $.500,000, and its accumulations exceed $800,000 more, making its entire assets ever $300,- 000, invested as detailed in the statement referred to. These results indicate that during the period of no'irl^’ forty years since its organization, (without a single change of its chief officer,) its business has been con ducted with judgment and prudence. It has been thus far successful in an eminent degree, discharging, as we are informed, all its obligations by the payment of about ten million dollars for losses, without asking a day’s delay in any instance. It has had but little lit igation, notwithstanding the immense number of trans actions made. In order to attain as much certainty as possible in such a business as insurance, it has been the practice of the Company, for several years, at great labor, carefully to classify and arrange their risks into about fifty distinct classes, so as to ascertain the amount insured on each class, the amount of pre- | miums received thereon, and the amount of losses up on each. This classification, extending over a long period, and covering property to a very large amount,fur- . nishes reliable data, and presents a sound, substantial ; basis of actual experience, upon which to conduct its i business. Insurance is not a matter of luck or chance, : as many suppose; its hazards are ascertainable, and its principles capable of being reduced to a system, the practical working and results of which are as certain as that of any other business. The *Etna Company, ■ by adhering rigidly to its system, and placing its busi ness upon a healthy basis, has obtained the contidence ' of the community to an extent surpassed by no other Oooipany in the U. States, and has increased its busi ness and its income from year to year with a steady ; growth. One great source of its security is the wide distributiou of its risks—a pelicy which it pursues ^ with great strictness—limiting the amount to be cov- ered in each locality. By this course it has passed, with comparative impunity, through some of the most ■ sweeping and destructive fires, which have swallowed up , other companies less cautious in their business. It is a system like this, based upon experience, which gives stability and soundness to a company, and to the as sured confidence and security.—Baltimort Fat riot. \mmm coMP.\i\v, H.\RTFOKD, CON.V. Selections in Prose and Verse; many of them by eminent citizens of the State. HISTORICAL AND CHRONOLOGICAL TABLES, .And a variety of Miscellaneous Information and Sta tistics, by C. II. WII.EY Number 3 is a new and revised edition of the North Carolina Reader, first published in 1851. Numbers I and 2 just issued, complete the series, which is, as a whole, cheaper than any other series of Readers in the United States, and as complete. The Editor (Prof. Hubbard) in his Preface to Num ber 1 deems it proper to allude to a few of the peculiar advantages aimed at by the Superintendent of Common Schools while making efforts to have this work com pleted. These are, 1, The eiiv(jurii;iement of it feeling of self-dependence, an 1 the euliMiucnt of popular sentiment in behalf of the Statf and its institutions. It was not thought im portant. h'lwever, to have more than one number of the Readers of merely a local interest. 2, To remedy the evil everi/where complained of in com mon scluioln, of a perpetual change in text books; an ex pensive habit, aud one which injures the Schools by preventing the children from being classified. A se ries of home Readers, it was supposed, would be cer tainly used, and this great evil thus avoided. 3, Economy, the popular system of Keaders being too long and being made so often merely to add to the profits of authors and publishers. This series is to consist of fewer numbera than those generally used, aud it is believed that these numbers are sufficient, while if the system were uni versally used in the State, the sum aaved to parents and children would amount to several thousand dallars annually. 4, To pul in the kands of children learning to read com positions sufficiently familiar but not of the character called childish comfwsitions, contaiuing, iu lessons easy enough for all ages, correct specimens of style, interesting in matter, and inculcating proper morals, and religiou. instruction. The prices are, for No. 1, 25 cents; No. 3, 37J cents and No. 3, 76 cents. A liberal deduction from these prices to Merchants and School Teachers. jB. J. HAL£ k SON. 1> Roscoe’s Crim.
