UT" K refer our readers to th? Annual statement of
tlie .I'tna Insurance Compiiny, of Hartford,
.'li will be found in another column. This success-
a; institution was inoorporated by the Legislature of
.i.e ticui in 181'.*, with a perpetual charter. Its
ij ;t;ii in ^000,000, and its accumulations exceed
more, making its entire assets over .i>300,-
ii'i'i, invested as detailed in the statement referred to.
I;ie:-e results indicate that during the period of nearly
• rt\ years since its ors;ani*ation, {without a single
■■. iiitri' of its chief officer,) its business has been con-
I .oif'i with judgment and prudence. It has been
;.us far successful in an eminent degree, discharging,
we are informed, all it.*? obligations l\y the payment
: about tfn tniilion dollars for losses, without asking a
delay in any instance. It has had hut little lit-
: ition, notwithstanding the immense number of trans-
. :ions made. In order to attain as much eeriainly as
'■.ible in such a business as insurance, it has been
.0 practice of the Company, for several years, at
jreut labor, carefully to classify and arrange their
-k“ into about fifty distinct clas^tes, so as to ascertain
le .uuount insured on each class, the amount of pre-
...uias received thereon, ana the amount of losses up-
; r:ich. This classiticiition, extending over a long
find covering property to a very large amuunt,fur-
.. 'iie-i reliable data, and presents a soun(t, substantial
if actual experience, upon which to conduct its
ness. Insurance is not a matter of Luck or chance,
ujany suppose; its hazards are ascertainable, and
■ ^ i iuciples capable of being reduced to a system, the
.tii-al working and results of which are as certain
th it of any other business. The -Etna Company,
H ihering rigidly to its system, and placing its busi-
• '? u] Jii a healthy basis, has obtained the confidence
: !Uf community to an extent surpassed by no other
ru}' 111 V in the U. StJites, and has increa.sed its busi-
- ;iu i its income from year to year with u steady
viL One great source of its security is the wide
. -tri''Utiou of its risks—a policy which it pursues
:li iireat strictness—limiting the amount to be cov-
^ >•1 ill each locality. By this course it has passed,
-.th • imparative impunity, through some of the most
-wi rj iiig and destructive fires, which have swallowed up
•rit-i' ■ ■tnpanies less cautious in their bu>ines>. It is
-v'tem like this, based upon experience, which gives
•it> ';ity ani soundness to a company, and to the as-
' rri c 'UliJence and security. — JJollitnorii

.\inBER 3,
CONTAINING A FAMILIAR HISTORY AND DESCRIF
TION OF NORTH CAROLINA.
Selections in Prose and Verse; many of them by
eminent citizens of the State.
HISTORICAL AND CHRONOLOGICAL TABLES,
•\nd a variety of Miscellaneous information and Sta
tistics, by
C. H. %VII.EV
Number 3 is a new and revised edition of the North
Carolina Reader, first published in 1851. Numbers 1
and 2 just issued, complete the series, which is, ay a
whole, cheaper than any other series of Readers in the
United States, and as complete.
The Editor (Prof. Hubbard) in, his Preface to Num
ber 1 deems it proper to allude to a few of the peculiar
advantages aimed at by the Superintendent of Common
Schools while making efforts to have this work com
pleted. These are,
1, T’/ie encouraytment «/ a feeling of self-dependence,
and the enlistment of popular sentiment in behalf of
the State and its institutions. It was not thought im
portant, however, to have more than one number of
the Readers of merely a l«cal interest.
2, To remedy the evil everywhere complained of in com
mon schools, of a perpetual chunye in text books; an ex
pensive habit, and one which injures the Schools by
preventing the children from being classified. A se
ries of home Readers, it was supposed, would be cer
tainly used, and this great evil thus avoided.
3, tkonomy, the popular system of Headers being
too long and being made so often merely to add to
the profits of authors and publishers.
This series is to consist of fewer numbei.n than
those generally used, and it is believed that these
numbers are sufficient, while if the system were uni
versally used in the State, the sum saved to parents
and children would amount to several thousand dollars
annually.
4, To put in the hands of children Itantiuy to rntd com
position-" sutjicienlly familiar hut not of the character called
childish compositions, containing, in lessons easy enough
for all ages, correct specimens of style, interesting in
matter, and inculcating proper morals, and religious
instruction.
The prices are, for No. 1, 25 cents; No. 2, ;i7J cents
and No. 3, 75 ccnts. A liberal deduction from these
prices to Merchants and School Teachers.
